Baseball Drops Series Finale at USC

Shugy Klein, who made his second career start on Sunday, was dealing early on, sitting down nine of the first 11 batters he faced through three innings. In the fourth, the Revolutionaries found some run support, plating five in the top half of the inning. GW's first two runs came via a single to right field from Conlon Walker, scoring Charlie Rogan and Jude Clough. One batter later, USC's catcher committed a throwing error attempting to catch Walker stealing second and allowed Tyler Jones to advance home from third, extending the Buff & Blue lead to three. Later in the inning, Cristino Tufano continued his stellar start to the season by collecting two more RBI. Tufano shot a double down the left field line, scoring Walker and teammate Charlie Walsh to give the GW Revs a 5-0 advantage.
In the home half of the inning, USC got three runs back to cut GW's lead down to just two, cutting Klein's season debut short. He finished with 3.1 innings pitched and three earned runs on 51 pitches.
After neither team could find any offense in the fifth, USC struck again, plating four in the sixth to take a 7-5 lead. Despite having runners in scoring position on multiple occasions down the stretch, GW was unable to find the scoreboard again, surrendering the series finale to the Trojans.
Out of GW's bullpen, Matt Bruno had a stellar first showing in his first appearance as a sophomore. He tossed two innings, facing seven batters and allowing just one hit. Bruno tossed 32 pitches in route to two clean frames.
On offense, the Revolutionaries were led by Walker, who went 2-for-2 from the dish with two RBI, two walks and a run scored. Tufano finished with one hit and two RBI on the day, giving him five hits through the team's first three games. Clough and Jones both registered a hit as well, while Sam Gates reached base on a walk.
The GW Revs return to action Wednesday, facing second-ranked Virginia in Charlottesville. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ACC Network Extra.
