Women’s Basketball Meets Miami, Charlotte at Cayman Islands Classic
11/26/2025 6:06:00 AM | Women's Basketball
WASHINGTON – Following an 82-56 win over Morgan State on Sunday, the George Washington women's basketball team shifts its focus to matchups with Miami and Charlotte at the Cayman Islands Classic. The Revolutionaries battle the Hurricanes on Friday, then face the 49ers on Saturday, both tipping off at 1:30 p.m. in George Town, Grand Cayman. Games for the entire invitational will be streamed exclusively on FloCollege.
BREAKING DOWN THE CAYMAN CLASSIC
This week marks the first time GW women's basketball has competed in the annual Cayman Islands Classic. The Buff & Blue are one of eight teams participating in the women's event, while four schools are also taking part in a men's MTE earlier this week. GW is the only institution to have both its men's and women's teams competing in George Town, Grand Cayman.
"We're thrilled to compete in the Cayman Islands Classic this season," said GW Head Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan earlier this fall. "This year's field is full of competitive teams from top to bottom that will give us a real test before entering our conference schedule. Going to an event like this also gives our players an opportunity to be immersed in another culture, while also strengthening the relationships and bonds within our program by spending the Thanksgiving holiday together."
Included in the heavy-hitting field on the women's side are four teams from "Power Four" conferences, including Florida from the SEC, Georgia Tech and Miami from the ACC and Oklahoma State from the Big 12. St. John's (Big East), Memphis and Charlotte (American) round out the field of eight for the event.
The eight-team field will be broken into two divisions, the Cayman Brac and the Little Cayman. The Revolutionaries, along with the Hurricanes, the 49ers and Oklahoma State, will compete in the Little Cayman Division, while Florida, Georgia Tech, Memphis and St. John's make up the Cayman Brac.
BALANCED ATTACK BEATS THE BEARS
GW's offense looked as balanced as it has all season in Sunday's win over Morgan State, with 10 players getting in on the action, and four hitting double figures. Headlined by Gabby Reynolds' 18 off the bench, Colleen Phiri also got back on track with 13 points, including three triples. Kamari Sims continued her solid start to the season with 12, while Tanah Becker posted 10 points and seven gritty rebounds, all of which came on the offensive end. Sara Lewis and Jaeda Wilson just missed out with nine points apiece, while Lewis added seven boards of her own. Caia Loving made the most of her minutes off the bench, putting in four points and nabbing a team-high eight boards.
One of the keys to GW's success on Sunday was the ability to take care of the basketball. The GW Revs coughed the ball up just 10 times, less than half of the 20.5 turnovers per game the team was averaging heading into the matchup. On the flip side, GW forced 19 Morgan State turnovers, converting them into 20 points on the other end.
SCOUTING THE HURRICANES
Miami enters the holiday week 4-1 overall, coming off its first loss of the season last Saturday against 19th-ranked Iowa. The Hurricanes are led by Head Coach Tricia Cullop, who's in her second season with the program. Cullop is in her 26th year as a Division I bench boss, having spent eight seasons with Evansville from 2000-08 and 16 campaigns with Toledo from 2008-24.
Friday's matchup will be the second meeting between the two programs all-time. The teams met in 2010 as part of the Miami Holiday Classic held on the Hurricanes' campus in Coral Gables, with Miami winning that game, 83-62.
On the court, Miami is paced by Ra Shaya Kyle, who's averaging 15. 8 points a contest on 60.4% shooting from the floor. Kyle also leads Miami on the glass, pulling down 8.2 boards per game. Gal Raviv is putting in 11.4 points a night and dishing out a team-best 4.6 assists per game, while Amarachi Kimpson is tallying 10.6 points and leads the squad with nine steals this season. Miami's full 2025-26 season stats can be found here.
SCOUTING THE 49ERS
Charlotte travels to the Cayman Islands with a 4-3 record, most recently beating Wofford, 73-59, on Saturday afternoon. All three of the 49ers' losses have come against power conference opponents, including Auburn, LSU and Cal. Charlotte will face another power conference opponent before battling GW, taking on 24th-ranked Oklahoma State on Friday at 11:00 a.m.
The 49ers are led by Head Coach Tomekia Reed, who took over the program prior to the 2024-25 campaign. She's in her eighth year overall, having spent six seasons prior with Jackson State from 2018-24. The Revolutionaries will face Charlotte for the 10th time in program history, with the first eight coming while the 49ers were members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The most recent matchup between the clubs was two years ago at the Puerto Rico Shootout during the 2023-24 season.
The Charlotte offense is led by Princess Anderson, who's averaging 15.7 points a game, the only player to average double figures in scoring thus far in the season. Zoe Best is putting in 8.0 points a night, while Asianae Nicholson is tallying 6.7 points and a team-best 9.0 rebounds. Tanajah Hayes leads the program in helpers, averaging 5.2 assists per game. Charlotte's 2025-26 stats can be found here.
