GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman – Sophomore Gabby Reynolds erupted for 27 points on the first Day of the Cayman Islands Classic, leading GW to overtime, but was unable to pull out the close win. The Revolutionaries fell to Miami, 83-77, to fall to 2-5 on the season.
GW came to play early, getting out to a quick 16-12 lead over the Hurricanes despite early foul trouble to multiple GW starters. Caia Loving was especially crucial in the early spark, notching four points immediately off the bench, while Emma Theodorsson got rolling early with six first-quarter points.
After not tallying a point in the game's first 10 minutes, Reynolds came alive, posting 14 points in the second stanza, connecting on 6-of-8 shots from the floor and both of her three-point attempts. This helped GW outscore Miami 27-16 in the quarter, taking a 39-33 lead into the halftime break.
Reynolds carried her momentum into the second half, putting up eight more points in the third to lead the Buff & Blue. In a quarter of runs, GW extended the lead to as many as 15 before the Hurricanes quickly got it back down to six heading to the fourth.
After a 6-0 Miami run tied the score with seven minutes to go, both teams traded blows down the stretch, neither leading by more than four points. The quarter was highlighted by a clutch bucket from Theodorsson, who hit a top-of-the-key triple to tie the game up with 49 seconds remaining. Both teams got possessions in the final 15 seconds of play, but neither could capitalize, sending the game to overtime.
In GW's first extra period of the season, the early foul trouble finally caught up to the Revolutionaries. Both Sara Lewis and Kamari Sims saw their day end in the first minute of OT, while Reynolds played cautiously with four. The Hurricanes ultimately outscored GW 11-5 in the extra frame, hanging on to win 83-77.
Reynolds' 27 points led the way for GW offensively, while Theodorsson notched 14, her best since joining the Buff & Blue. Mia James added a dozen off GW's bench, while Loving finished with nine, the most for her against a Division I opponent since the 2022-23 season. The difference came at the free-throw line, as Miami shot 40 times from the charity stripe, compared to just 14 times for the Revolutionaries.
GW returns to action tomorrow, concluding the Cayman Islands Classic at 1:30 p.m. vs. Charlotte. Live coverage of the contest will be available at FloCollege.
