The George Washington women's basketball team's historic run in the WNIT came to a close on Monday night, falling to Illinois State, 61-53. GW finishes the season with an 18-18 record, tied for the most wins the program has enjoyed in eight seasons.
The Revolutionaries led by a point at the halftime break after a tightly contested opening 20 minutes. However, behind its home crowd, Illinois State outscored the GW Revs, 18-12, in the third quarter to seize control of momentum. The Redbirds topped the Buff & Blue, 17-14, in the final frame to secure the win and punch their ticket to the Fab Four.
Kamari Sims led GW with 17 points, shooting 3-5 from deep. Sara Lewis, who battled foul trouble in the first half, finished with 13 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Gabby Reynolds finished with 12 points, 10 of which came in the first quarter, her 16th consecutive double-figure performance to end the season.
GW's 36 games played this season are the most all-time, setting a new program record. Tanah Beck, Kamari Sims and Mia James all now share a program record for most games played by an individual in one year as well.
GW has shown impressive growth under first-year head coach Ganiyat Adeduntan as she led the program to its most postseason wins in a single season in 29 years. She's one of three coaches in program history to advance to the postseason in her first season at the helm, and the only coach to win a postseason game in her first year.
