WASHINGTON – Following a series win over Rhode Island last weekend, the George Washington baseball team carries its momentum into a mid-week matchup with Georgetown on Tuesday. The Revolutionaries battle the Hoyas at 6:30 p.m. at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va.
LAST TIME OUT
The Buff & Blue secured its second A-10 series win of the season with a 7-4 victory over Rhode Island on Sunday. The win moved the Revolutionaries to 23-16 on the season and 6-6 in the Atlantic 10. Ellis Schwartz led the way for GW's offense all weekend, tallying seven hits in the series and five RBI. Schwartz also scored three of GW's runs and was a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen bases as well. On the mound, Jarrett Korson led GW to its 11-6 win on Friday after throwing five innings in relief. Korson didn't allow any earned runs in the outing and picked up his third victory of the season. On Sunday, Brandon Siegenthaler also earned his third win of the year after throwing four stellar innings out of GW's pen. Siegenthaler allowed one earned run and struck two batters out for the GW Revs. Benny Wilson secured GW's series-finale win with a three-inning save, his first appearance in nearly a month. Wilson only allowed two hits and tallied four strikeouts to send the Rams packing.
PREVIEW OF THE A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP
Georgetown's home field this season, Capital One Park in Tysons, Va., will also serve as the host site for the 2024 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship later this spring. GW will be one of only two A-10 teams to preview the ballpark before the postseason, with the other being George Mason, who battle the Hoyas on May 1. GW sits firmly in the mix for a berth into the A-10 Championship tournament, currently tied for sixth in the conference standings but only two games out of first place. A test for GW looms in the near future as Saint Louis, the conference's current top seed, travels to the DMV for a weekend series starting this Friday at Tucker Field.
DITOMASO ON THE CLIMB AGAIN
Last Friday, Steve DiTomaso continued his rise to the top of the GW all-time hits leaderboard when he surpassed Ryan Dacey for fifth in program history. DiTomaso's hit came in the first inning against Rhode Island, an infield RBI single to third base. Following the series with Rhode Island, DiTomaso now has 271 career hits, needing just three more to pass Thom Shanley ('06) for fourth place and 11 more to jump Joey Bartosic ('17) who currently sits in third. Tom Zebroski is the program's all-time leader in hits, recording 299 during his career from 2006-10.
SCOUTING THE HOYAS
Georgetown welcomes GW to Capital One Park after hosting UConn for a three-game series over the weekend. The Huskies got the best of the Hoyas, sweeping the series in three-straight one run games. Georgetown holds a record of 26-13 this season and is 8-4 in the Big East. Earlier this season, Georgetown defeated GW, 8-6, at Tucker Field on March 12. The Hoyas scored all eight of their runs in the sixth inning to earn the win. The Hoyas are led by Head Coach Edwin Thompson, who's in his fourth season in the DMV. Thompson has a 94-89 record with the Hoyas and a 253-245 career record in his 11 years of coaching, which includes stints at Bates and Eastern Kentucky.
On the field, Georgetown is led by Christian Ficca with a .351 batting average and 47 RBI. Ficca leads the team with nine home runs and has 12 doubles this season. The Hoyas' top starter is Andrew Williams, who's 4-1 on the season with a 2.36 ERA. Williams has 37 strikeouts in 45.2 innings pitched.
