TYSONS, Va. – The George Washington baseball team dropped its DMV showdown with Georgetown on Tuesday night, 13-5.
The Hoyas put up big numbers early on, registering five runs in the second inning and seven in the third to open a 12-0 lead through the first three frames. GW got on the scoreboard in the sixth, tallying a run on a bases-loaded walk from Nick Mullen.
After Georgetown got the run back in the bottom of the sixth, GW's bats came alive for four runs in the seventh. Tim Nicholson registered his second home run of the season, a three-run shot to cut the deficit to 13-4. Scoring on Nicholson's long ball was Robbie Lavey and Brett Young. Later in the inning, Ellis Schwartz became the second Revolutionary to homer in the contest, registering a solo shot for his fourth of the season. Despite the late offensive push, GW would eventually fall by a score of 13-5.
In the ninth inning, Steve DiTomaso tallied his third hit of the contest, moving him into fourth on GW's all-time hits leaderboard. DiTomaso passes Tom Shanley, who registered 273 hits during his Buff & Blue career. DiTomaso now has 274 career hits and is just eight away from surpassing Joey Bartosic for third all-time.
On the mound, Max Haug earned the start for GW. He tossed 1.2 innings and allowed five earned runs. GW used four different relievers after Haug, with Tyler Blankenship and Reese Crochet not allowing an earned run in either of their outings. Blankenship tossed 1.2 innings for GW and tallied three strikeouts, while Crochet pitched two innings with three K's.
GW returns to action this Friday to open a three-game series with Saint Louis at Tucker Field. Game one of the A-10 weekend slate is set for 3:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
