Baseball Defeats Rhode Island, Wins Weekend Series
4/21/2024 9:27:00 PM | Baseball
Despite the victory for the home team, the visitors were the first to strike, getting one run in the top of the first inning off an RBI single. Like GW has done all weekend, the Revolutionaries had an answer with a run of their own in the home half of the frame. GW's run came courtesy of an RBI single that deflected off the Rams' pitcher, resulting in Sam Gates scoring from second base.
Rhode Island quickly regained the lead with two runs in the second inning, but GW cut the deficit in half via an RBI double from Gates later in the inning. Shugy Klein, GW's starter for the series finale, was relieved for Brandon Siegenthaler in the third inning. Siegenthaler put together a great performance, keeping Rhode Island off the scoreboard until the sixth inning. During the Rams' offensive dry spell, GW recaptured the lead with three runs in the fifth inning. GDUB's first two in the frame came off an Ellis Schwartz RBI single to right field, scoring Brett Young and Clough. One batter later, Robbie Wacker dropped a sacrifice bunt back down the third base line which allowed Steve DiTomaso to score on the play.
After two scoreless innings, Rhode Island finally got to Siegenthaler for one run in the sixth inning. Despite the blemish, he managed to limit the damage to just one and preserve GW's slim 5-4 lead. The Buff & Blue would later add insurance runs in the sixth when Brett Young smashed a two-RBI triple down the right field line.
GW turned to Benny Wilson out of the bullpen at the start of the seventh, his first appearance since March 24 against Canisius. Wilson didn't disappoint, carry GW the rest of the way for the three-inning save. Wilson got into trouble in the ninth with the bases loaded but managed to strike the final batter out to secure the victory. The save is Wilson's third of the season, while the win was credited to Siegenthaler, moving him to 3-2 on the year.
Despite only tallying six hits in the game, GW reached base a total of 17 times after drawing 10 walks and one hit by pitch. All six of GW's hits came from different batters, with Sam Gates leading the way. Gates reached base four times, recording one hit, and drawing three walks. He registered two runs scored and an RBI while also extending his on-base streak to an impressive 16 games. Young recorded two RBI and a run scored for GW, while Schwartz notched two RBI.
GW returns to action on Tuesday, making the short drive to Capital One Park in Tysons, Va., to battle Georgetown. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. GW's next A-10 series starts on Friday when Saint Louis visits Tucker Field. The series opener is set for 3:00 p.m. with live coverage on ESPN+.
