NORFOLK, Va. – The George Washington baseball team opened the 2024 season with a 4-1 loss at Old Dominion Friday afternoon. The contest opened a three-game set against the Monarchs that extends into Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
Leading the way for GW was Steve DiTomaso who finished 1-for-4 from the plate with an RBI. DiTomaso tallied the game's opening run in the top of the third inning when he singled through the right side to bring home Ellis Schwartz. DiTomaso's solid game also featured a spectacular sliding catch in the bottom of the first inning. Moving to his left, the GW left fielder laid out to make a basket catch and rob the Monarchs of an extra-base hit.
The Buff & Blue lead was short lived as Old Dominion tallied a run of their own in the bottom half of the third inning to knot the score at one apiece. An inning later, the Monarchs plated their final three runs to take a decisive 4-1 lead. The big inning was propelled by a fielding error from GW that ultimately led to three unearned runs in the frame for ODU.
Along with DiTomaso, Robbie Lavey and McGwire Tuffy both tallied hits in the season opener. Lavey finished 1-for-4 on the day, while Tuffy notched a 1-for-3 line in his first game with the Buff & Blue as a graduate transfer. Michael Foltz got the start on the mound for GDUB, tossing 4.0 innings and allowing one earned run. Foltz fanned four batters and allowed two hits in his season debut. Brayden Kurtz also made an appearance out of GW's bullpen, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings and punching out seven batters in relief.
The GW Revs are back in action tomorrow for a 2 p.m. matchup with ODU. A video stream will not be available, however, live stats can be followed online at GWsports.com.
