Buff & Blue make five-run second inning stand up
BALTIMORE - GW baseball got off to a fast start with a five-run second inning and held off a UMBC charge for a 6-5 win on Tuesday evening in Baltimore.
The Buff & Blue broke out the bats with Tim Nicholson starting the five-run rally with an RBI single. After a double steal, Sam Gates slammed a two-run double to increase GW's lead to 3-0. Gates later scored on an RBI single by Eddie Micheletti Jr., who in turn came around on a double from Michael Kohn.
Micheletti's single extended his hitting streak to 14 games in a row, tied for the 10th longest in program history. He finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks.
UMBC plated three in the third and another in the fourth to slice the deficit to one, but Micheletti increased the lead to two in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Anthony Frechette.
The Retrievers got a run back on a wild pitch in the eighth inning, and had two on with two out in the ninth inning, but Michael Foltz finished off his third save of the year with a strikeout.
Cade Davis earned the win in relief by allowing just one run in 1.2 innings of relief of starter Max Haug, who tossed the first two frames. Austin Odell was impressive out of the pen as well, striking out four without a hit allowed in 4.1 innings.
Sitting just a half-game outside of the A-10 Championship with three weekends to go, GW will face a stern test this weekend when it visits second-place Saint Louis for a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
