Colonials ride big sixth inning to victory
WASHINGTON - George Washington baseball put together a complete effort at Tucker Field on Friday, riding stellar pitching and a big six-run sixth inning to an 8-2 victory over UMass.
The Colonials struck first on Friday, plating a run in the second thanks to an RBI single from Mike Ludowig. UMass would tie the game up in the top of the third, but GW pulled ahead in the fourth on an RBI single from Ty Acker.
The Minutemen would knot the game at two in the top of the sixth, but it didn't take long for the Buff & Blue to respond. In the bottom half of the inning, the Colonials sent 11 batters to the plate, and plated six runs thanks to a pair of RBI walks, an error, a fielder's choice, and two RBI singles. The big inning put the Colonials up 8-2, and they never looked back.
On the mound, Harrison Cohen cruised through seven innings. The graduate student allowed just two runs on four hits in a winning effort. Cohen also set down four batters on strikes, giving him 93 strikeouts this year.
Connor Harris also pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief, allowing just two hits while striking out three.
Offensively, Mike Ludowig and Noah Levin paced GW's offense, combining to go 7-for-10 and driving in three runs apiece. Additionally, Ty Acker collected a pair of hits.
Up next, GW and UMass face off in the series finale tomorrow at 11 a.m. Prior to tomorrow's first pitch, the Colonials will honor its seniors and graduate students in a senior day ceremony. Fans are encouraged to arrive at the ballpark by 10 a.m. in order to watch the festivities.
