Cade Fergus hits 19th career home run in season finale
ARLINGTON, Va - George Washington baseball ended its 2022 season on a high note, cruising to a 6-0 shutout victory over UMass on Senior Day at The Tuck. When the Buff and Blue left the field their postseason aspirations were still alive, only to be eliminated from contention by virtue of Richmond's win against Rhode Island later in the afternoon.
Prior to first pitch, GW honored 11 seniors and grad students for their contributions to the Buff & Blue. However, once the game began, it was sophomore Logan Koester who was the star of the show. Koester hurled 7.1 shutout innings against the Minutemen, striking out four while allowing just three hits.
Offensively, GW rode the bats of several Senior Day honorees to victory. Graduate student Mike Ludowig opened up the scoring with an RBI single in the second that staked the Colonials to a 2-0 lead. Then, in the fifth, senior Cade Fergus launched his 13th homer of the year to push the lead up to 3-0. Fergus' home run was his 19th career long ball, tying him for 23rd all-time in GW history with John Flaherty.
The Colonials added three more runs in the eighth inning, before handing the ball to grad student Trevor Kuncl, who pitched a pair of scoreless frames to earn his 16th career save.
Steve DiTomaso picked up a triple on Saturday to end the year as GW's top hitter at .332. In addition to DiTomaso, Fergus (.315), Derek Ripp (.311), and Logan Leax (.306) all finished the year posting strong averages.
The Buff & Blue will now bid farewell to its 11-member senior class and turn its attention to this summer's MLB draft with the potential for more Colonials to join the professional ranks.
