Connor Harris strikes out career-high 11 batters
ARLINGTON, Va. - Cade Fergus slugged a pair of homers, but George Washington baseball was unable to hold onto its lead late, falling to Dayton 5-3 at Tucker Field on Saturday.
GW's offense continued to find early inning success, as Fergus crushed his first homer of the day in the third inning to put GW up 2-0. Starter Connor Harris would make the lead stand throughout the first six innings thanks to a career-high 11 strikeouts, and GW would add another run thanks to a Fergus solo shot.
Unfortunately, GW ran out of steam in the seventh inning. With Harris' pitch count approaching 100, the Flyers chipped away with two hits to start the frame. While Harris was able to get a pair of outs, Dayton eventually broke through with a couple of RBI hits to tie the game up at 3.
In the eighth inning, Dayton took the lead for good. A lead-off walk and single put two runners on, which allowed Flyers' second baseman Ben Jones to cash in with an RBI double that made it 5-3.
Offensively, both Fergus and Steve DiTomaso continued their tear at the top of the lineup. Fergus finished 3-for-4 with a walk, while DiTomaso was 2-for-4. Additionally, Tim Nicholson returned to the lineup for the first time since March 11, and went 1-for-2 with a walk.
Up next, GW will look to take the series' rubber game on Sunday. First pitch against the Flyers is slated for noon, with coverage available on ESPN+.
