Six Colonials pick up hits in the effort
PHILADELPHIA - George Washington baseball took a one-run lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, but a costly throwing error allowed Saint Joseph's to plate a pair of runs and finish off the series sweep with a 4-3 win.
As was the case in the first two games of the series, SJU was the first team to strike. The Hawks would plate single runs in the first and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead.
However, GW battled back with a rally in the fifth. Seven Colonials' batters reached base in the top of the inning, including RBI singles by Ty Acker and Steve DiTomaso, to pull the visitors in front 3-2.
Over the next three innings, GW starter Justin Solt and relief pitcher Rich Pfluger allowed just one hit to the Hawks' potent offense. Unfortunately, SJU found a way to steal the game in the eighth.
Following a pair walks, SJU's Brandon Hueth tried to lay down a bunt. Hueth's attempt was popped up and caught by Acker, however, the Colonials' third baseman tried to pick off Andrew Cossetti on first and threw the ball into right field. The error allowed both Cossetti and Nate Thomas to score and wrapped up the 4-3 win.
Despite the result, several GW players swung the bat well on Sunday. Six different Colonials picked up a hit, including first-year Jon Bruno, who added a pair of walks to reach base three times.
Up next, GW will continue its road swing with a stop in Baltimore to face UMBC. First pitch between the Buff & Blue and Retrievers is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m.
