WASHINGTON - George Washington baseball returns to the diamond this weekend when it heads south down I-95 for an A-10 series against Richmond. The series opens Friday at 2:30 p.m., followed by games Saturday at 1 p.m, and Sunday at noon. All three contests will be available on ESPN+.
A-10 PITCHING SUCCESS:
The Buff & Blue has gotten off to a good start on the mound through its first three series of the year. Currently, GW ranks top-three in the conference in team ERA (3.81) and runs allowed (39), and the Colonials have only given up two homers, which is the least amount in the A-10.
GW's staff can credit its three weekend starters for the spark. Harrison Cohen, Justin Solt, and Connor Harris all have sub-three ERAs in A-10 play.
TWO WEEK TEAR:
Over the last 14 days, Colonials' catcher Anthony Frechette has been smacking the cover off the ball. The senior enters this weekend with a .452 batting average, 14 hits, six RBIs, and a 1.205 OPS over the last two weeks. Frechette's batting average is over 100 points higher than any other Colonial during that span.
Additionally, Frechette has continued his defensive dominance behind the plate. He's caught all 72 innings that GW has played over the last two weeks, and has thrown out four opposition baserunners.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS:
Richmond enters this weekend's contest at 17-16, but the Spiders have gotten off to a rocky start in the A-10, having won just two of their first nine games. In their most recent series, the Spiders dropped two of three to crosstown rival VCU, giving up 26 runs in the final two games of the series.
Dominic Toso is the Spiders main offensive threat. The redshirt junior is second in the A-10 in batting average (.414), and leads Richmond in RBIs (45), home runs (6), extra base hits (20), and OPS (1.105).
On the mound, GW will get a chance to see reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Week Brock Weirather. Last week, Weirather tossed a complete game shutout against VCU, setting down eight batters on strikes while surrendering eight total hits. This season, Weirather is 4-2 with a 4.38 ERA and 38 strikeouts.
