GW visits #7 Virginia before welcoming Coppin State to the Tuck
WASHINGTON- GW baseball has a jam-packed start to the week, as the team will travel to Charlottesville to take on #7 Virginia on Tuesday, before entertaining the Coppin State Eagles on Wednesday. First pitch for both contests is slated for 3:00 p.m., with live coverage available on ESPN+.
OVER THE WEEKEND:
The Buff & Blue won its first series of the season against Maine, winning Friday's opener, 5-2, before pummeling the Black Bears in Sunday's finale 12-4. The final game against Maine featured GW's best offensive performance to date, as the team tallied season-highs in runs (12), hits (13), RBIs (10), and walks (6).
SUCCESS FROM STEVE:
Junior Steve DiTomaso has been on an offensive tear for GW. The Haddonfield, N.J. native hit .435 over the past week, marking the continuation of a hot stretch that has seen him raise his batting average from .143 to .325 over the last eight games. Additionally, DiTomaso provided some theatrics this past Tuesday when he provided the walk-off hit in the 10th inning of GW's 8-7 comeback against Towson.
TABLE SETTER:
Despite being a new addition to GW's roster, first-year Tim Nicholson has adjusted nicely to the Colonials' leadoff spot. Nicholson has reached base safely in nine straight games, and through the Colonials' first 10 contests, Nicholson leads the team in runs (9), and is second on the team in hits (12).
SCOUTING VIRGINIA:
Tuesday afternoon's game will feature a face-off between the Colonials and one of the best programs in college baseball. Virginia, who is undefeated at 11-0 and ranked seventh nationally by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, entered 2022 picked as a top-25 team by several outlets, including Baseball America, USA Today Coaches, and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
The Cavaliers are looking to build off of an impressive 2021 campaign that saw the team advance to the program's fifth College World Series after going 36-27. Virginia returns six starting position players from last year, including sophomore catcher Kyle Teel, who earned preseason All-America honors from D1baseball.com.
SCOUTING COPPIN STATE:
The Golden Eagles will enter Wednesday's contest at 3-8, but the team features a roster that is loaded with preseason All-MEAC talent. Mike Dorcean, Sebastien Sarabia, Marcos Castillo, Darren Hagan and Jordan Hamberg were all named to the Preseason All-Conference Team for Coppin State, and currently everyone but Hagan boasts an above .300 batting average.
