Colonials to honor eight seniors prior to Sunday's game
WASHINGTON - GW baseball will host its final home A-10 series of the season at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park this weekend, welcoming in Richmond for a four-game set. The series starts Friday at 3 p.m. with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon and a single game at noon on Sunday.
Prior to the series finale on Sunday, GW will honor eight seniors - Steve Barmakian, Cole Beeker, Domenic Boselli, Jaret Edwards, Tyler Hix, Keagan McGinnis, Elliott Raimo and Kevin Sylvestri - in a ceremony beginning at 11:30 a.m. A live stream of the ceremony will be available via ESPN+.
A LOOK AT THE A-10: GW sits at 11-5 in league play following its series victory last weekend at George Mason. The Colonials are two games off the pace of first-place VCU (13-3), who wraps up conference play with a series against Dayton (8-4) this weekend. The Flyers and Colonials will then finish the season against one another next weekend in Ohio.
PRETTY, PRETTY, PRETTY GOOD: GW continues to pace the A-10 with a .306 team batting average, coming in at 13th nationally prior to this weekend. The Colonials are also up to third in the league in scoring at 6.8 runs per game and are 18-3 when scoring at least five runs in a game this season. That includes 15 wins in the last 16 such instances. Individually, Steve DiTomaso (.366, 3rd), Noah Levin (.359, 5th) and Steve Barmakian (.346, 7th) rank among the conference's top hitters.
SPRINTING THROUGH THE FINISH: Jaret Edwards, the lone weekend starter that will be honored on senior day, has been tremendous since moving into the rotation in late March. In five starts, he has allowed just five earned runs in 26.1 innings for a 1.71 ERA. Last Sunday's complete game shutout was the second of his career and third overall complete game, two of which have come in the last three weekends. He now leads the team, and ranks fourth in the A-10, with a 2.91 ERA.
ABOUT THE SPIDERS: Richmond comes in at 2-6 in league play after being swept in four games by Dayton last weekend. The Spiders have played just two weekend series after dealing with COVID-19 protocols in April. On the field, Richmond has been one of the top offensive teams in the league with a .300 team batting average, good for second in the circuit and 20th nationally. Drew Blakely (.371) and Jordan Schulefand (.356) rank among the league's top six in hitting. UR holds a 5.45 team ERA and leads the league with a .973 fielding percentage.
Richmond leads the all-time series, 71-51, and took two out of three in the last meeting in 2019.
