Colonials open series with 6-5 triumph over Spiders
ARLINGTON, Va. - Domenic Boselli poked a single through the shift on the right side with two outs in the last of the ninth, lifting GW baseball to a 6-5 win over Richmond in the opener of a four-game A-10 series on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
With runners at second and third and two away, Boselli slapped a 1-0 pitch from Jacob Marcus past the shifted second baseman to give GW (23-13, 12-5) its second walk-off victory of the season. It was a fitting capper for Boselli, who was 2-for-5 with a homer and three batted in on the day.
Boselli's solo shot in the bottom of the first capped off a two-run jumpstart for the Buff & Blue after Cade Fergus tripled and scored on Steve DiTomaso's RBI groundout.
Richmond (16-13, 2-7) came back to take the lead with two runs in the third and two in the fifth, albeit briefly, as the Colonials scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to reassume a 5-4 lead.
The Spiders tied the game in the top of the eighth and kept the momentum after getting a double play with the bases loaded in the bottom half. However, Derek Ripp started the ninth with a double, setting the stage for Boselli's dramatics.
Rich Pfluger started and battled on the hill, allowing only two earned runs on four hits in 4.2 innings with four strikeouts. GW's bullpen duo of Christopher Kahler and Trevor Kuncl dominated in relief, yielding an unearned run on three hits in 4.1 frames. Kuncl picked up his fourth win of the year, retiring the final five he faced after coming on in the eighth inning.
GW will look to ride the wave of emotion into a doubleheader on Saturday with a pair of seven-inning games. First pitch in the opener is set for noon.
