Colonials set for #RevRivalry Matchup
GW softball seeks to get its Atlantic 10 schedule off to a strong start this weekend when it visits Revolutionary Rival George Mason for four games over two days.
The series begins with a Saturday doubleheader starting at noon and finishes with another twin bill on Sunday, streamed via ESPN+, with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW took three of four games at UMBC last weekend, showcasing both its offensive firepower and pitching excellence.
Offensively, the Buff and Blue hit .360 in the series with six home runs, highlighted by a 13-run outburst to begin last Saturday's second game for their most productive inning since a 14-run frame vs. North Carolina Central on Feb. 9, 2008.
Sidney Bloomfield (.455), Jessica Linquist (.429) and Sierra Lange (.400) all hit at least .400 on the weekend.
In addition to a pair of run-rule victories, the Colonials won a 1-0 pitchers' duel in Sunday's opener behind Lange's four-hit shutout and Hannah Eslick's solo homer.
Lange turned in a pair of quality starts, compiling a 1.62 ERA with 19 strikeouts across 13 innings. With her win Sunday, she reached 50 career victories to tie Sarah Costlow (2015-18) for the program record.
A-10 LOOK AHEAD:Â This spring, GW was picked atop the A-10 preseason poll for the first time, earning 93 points to edge second-place Fordham by a single point.
The Buff and Blue will look to back up that prediction over a 24-game conference slate featuring six weekend series. They're part of a five-team pod that includes Saint Louis, Dayton and Saint Bonaventure, in addition to George Mason.
Four of the conference's 10 teams will advance to the A-10 Championship, which will run on a to-be-determined campus site on May 13-15.
STRONG SPARK:Â Linquist continues to be a tough out at the top of the GW lineup. The graduate student from West Deptford, N.J., owns a .519 on-base percentage through 14 games, thanks to 14 hits, 12 walks and a pair of HBPs. She's tied for the top spot among Colonials with her 15 RBIs and tied for second on the squad with 10 runs scored.
Last weekend, Linquist cracked her first two home runs of the season at UMBC while slashing .429/.714/1.286 for the series.
RECORD WATCH:Â With her start in the finale at UMBC, Jenna Cone became the program's all-time leader in games played at 205, passing Rochelle Draper (2015-18).
The decorated slugger is closing in on two more of the program's all-time marks, both currently held by Megan Linn (2014-17). She enters the weekend with 230 career hits, just five behind Linn's record, and she also has 160 career runs scored, four away from Linn's program record there.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS:Â George Mason is off to an 8-0 start after sweeping Saint Bonaventure last weekend to open conference play and then taking a doubleheader from Morgan State on Wednesday.
The Patriots have a 0.92 staff ERA, led by reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Week Haellie Gordon, who is 4-0 with a 0.29 ERA and 22 Ks in 24 innings. With a .381 batting average, Meghan Graham has been their top hitter so far.
These teams are slated to meet again on the Mount Vernon Campus on May 1-2Â for four more games.
