GW softball went 1-1 on Saturday in a doubleheader vs. Rhode Island. The Revolutionaries jumped on the Rams quickly in game one to win 10-2 in five innings, before Rhode Island came back strong in game two for a 5-2 win. GW moved to 10-19 overall with a 9-11 mark in the A-10.
Ashley Corpuz made history on Saturday, as her third walk of the day in the fifth inning of game two was her 43rd of the season, which broke the GW single-season walks record. Corpuz now owns both the GW single-season walks record and the GW career walks record.
Sydney Hogue delivered the biggest hit of the day for GW, as she opened up the scoring in game one with a third-inning grand slam. It was the first grand slam of Hogue's career, and her sixth home run of the season – second most on GW.
GW put the first game away with a six-run fourth inning. The Revolutionaries collected a pair of hits, along with three walks and a hit-by-pitch, batting through the order to assume a 10-1 lead. Rhode Island got one run back in the fifth, but wasn't able to escape run-rule territory as GW clinched the 10-2 win in five innings.
Cece Smith went the distance for GW, striking out five in her eighth victory of 2026.Â
Game two stayed a low-scoring affair until late, as the only run scored before the sixth was a second-inning Rhode Island sac fly. Rhode Island tacked on another four runs with the help of a pair of GW errors in the sixth to take a 5-0 edge.
The Revolutionaries went down swinging in game two, as three-straight GW doubles scored two in the seventh, but the home side ultimately fell short in the 5-2 final.Â
Chloe Greene made the start and pitched into the sixth. Three of Rhode Island's runs were charged to Greene, though none were earned. Sophia Torreso finished the game in relief, and only one of two runs charged against Torreso were earned.
GW celebrated its senior class on Saturday, as the Revolutionaries honored Corpuz, Greene, Daniella Lew, Lucy Goodwin and Emma Fales in a post-doubleheader senior ceremony.Â
GW and Rhode Island return to the GW Softball Field tomorrow for the series finale tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.Â
