No. 6 GW softball lost twice on the first day of the A-10 Championship, falling to No. 3 Dayton by a final of 3-2 in game one before dropping to No. 5 Saint Joseph's, 8-4, in Wednesday's elimination game.Â
GW 2, Dayton 3
GW and Dayton went down to the wire to open up both teams' stay at the A-10 Championship, but it was Dayton that got the better of GW to start the postseason.Â
After a scoreless first two innings, Dayton rattled off runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead on the Revolutionaries.
GW cut into the deficit with a pair of runs in the sixth, as Daniella Lew and Ashley Corpuz smacked back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 3-2. Though GW managed to quiet the Flyers offense in the late innings, its offense was only able to muster the two runs and Dayton claimed victory.
Cece Smith made the start for the Revolutionaries, striking out five in five innings in the circle with three runs allowed. Sophia Torreso handled the sixth for GW, holding Dayton scoreless with only one hit against.
Corpuz claimed a walk in game one, which was the 150th walk of her career, making her the first player in program history to record 150+ walks and 150+ hits.Â
The loss forced GW immediately into an elimination game vs. Saint Joseph's.
GW 4, Saint Joseph's 8
A five-run third inning for Saint Joseph's was the difference in Wednesday's elimination game as Saint Joseph's took down GW in the nightcap.
GW trailed large entering the final inning, down 8-1 after being hit hard in the second and third innings. The Revolutionaries never let up, scoring three in the seventh and loading the bases to bring up the game-tying run to the plate. The game ended on a hard-hit line drive down the third baseline by Katie Hendrickson, snagged by the Hawks' third baseman to prevent what otherwise may have gotten GW close to completing the comeback.
Highlighting GW's comeback efforts was Daniella Lew, who blasted a pair of solo home runs to lead off both the fifth and seventh innings. Corpuz and Lew both finished the game with a team-high two hits.Â
GW finished the season at 23-22 after falling in both postseason games. The Revolutionaries have the potential to return 11 student-athletes from this year's team into 2027.Â
