Softball Pounces on St. Bonaventure in Series Opener, 9-1; Concludes Regular Season with Doubleheader Saturday

A six-run first inning boosted GW softball to a 9-1, five-inning victory in the series opener at St. Bonaventure. The win lifted GW to 22-19 with an 11-11 record in conference games. The Revolutionaries and Bonnies will now play a doubleheader on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) to conclude the series.Â
The Revolutionaries sent 11 batters to the plate in the first innings, exploding out of the gate with three-straight doubles followed by three-straight walks. In all, GW batters doubled four times, walked four times and were hit once in a first inning in which the visitors gained complete control.
Cece Smith had her best stuff on Friday, fighting through poor weather conditions to throw the complete 5.0, allowing her only run (unearned) on a single that turned into a run on a GW fielding error. The junior struck out five and walked just two as she earned her 10th win of the season, reaching double-digit wins for the third time in her career.
Daniella Lew had a standout day offensively, doubling twice with a game-high three RBI. Five Revolutionaries doubled Friday as Ashley Corpuz, Paige Hayward, Sydney Hogue and Emma Fales also each collected a two-base hit. Isabella Ruby finished without an official at-bat but with three of GW's eight walks.
GW will close the regular season with two games tomorrow, and then will turn its attention to results across the conference this weekend to determine its postseason status.
