Colonials took two at Mason on Saturday
FAIRFAX, Va. - GW softball opened Atlantic 10 play on Saturday with a resounding sweep of Revolutionary Rival George Mason.
The Colonials pounded the previously unbeaten Patriots, 11-0, in five innings in the opener before following up with a 10-1 victory to close the day. They totaled 21 runs on 26 hits in the doubleheader while holding the home team to a combined one run on four hits.
Sierra Lange led the way, showcasing her continued all-around excellence. The redshirt junior standout won both ends of the twin bill to become the program's career leader in victories with 52, and she also did her part offensively with four hits, including a home run, plus three RBIs and three runs scored.
GW 11, George Mason 0 (5 innings):Â The Colonials wasted no time jumping on the Patriots in the opener. Jessica Linquist lashed a leadoff home run, and Alessandra Ponce added a two-run blast later in the opening inning.
Linquist and Ponce also provided run-scoring hits in a three-run second inning that pushed the lead to 6-0.
Lange helped her own cause in the fourth inning, hitting her first homer of the season over the left field fence. The three-run shot brought in Linquist and Sidney Bloomfield.
Ponce would add her fourth RBI of the day with a groundout in GW's two-run fifth that set the final margin.
Linquist reached all four times at the plate with a double, a homer and two walks, and she scored four times to equal her single-game career high. Ponce finished 2-for-3 with the four RBIs, while Jenna Cone recorded a three-hit effort that included a double.
In total, five of GW's 12 hits went for extra bases in the victory.
Lange allowed just one hit across three scoreless innings to earn the win before Faith Weber tossed the final two frames. It was the fifth shutout of the season for the GW staff.

Mason led 1-0 after three innings before the visitors seized control with seven runs via five hits and a pair of errors.Â
Weber started the rally with a single up the middle and later finished the scoring with an RBI triple. In between, Sidney Bloomfield, Cone, Lange and Alexa Williams contributed RBIs to the surge.
Lange and Weber posted three hits apiece in the victory, while Ponce added two more RBIs to bring her total to seven on the day and 15 for the season.
Linquist had two more hits and an HBP to lift her season OBP to .556 out of the leadoff spot.
GW once again spread out pitching duties with Lange working the first four innings before turning it over to Weber and Megan Osterhaus.
