Colonials finish 4-0 weekend at George Mason
FAIRFAX, Va. - Jenna Cone made history Sunday with GW softball's first-ever three-home run game, helping the Buff and Blue finish off another dominant weekend in style.
The decorated slugger went deep in three straight at-bats in the third, fourth and sixth innings of an 8-2 victory in the series finale, knocking in a program-record seven runs in the process.
Earlier in the day, the Colonials took the opener 9-0 in six innings, paced by three extra-base hits from Sierra Lange.Â
With the four-game sweep to open Atlantic 10 play, they've now won seven straight and 12 of 14 to improve to 12-6 on the season.
For Cone, the homers were her 60th, 61st and 62nd as a member of the Buff and Blue, with the middle one her fourth career grand slam. In the game, the decorated slugger also became the program's all-time leader in career hits (238) and runs (165), adding on to her still-growing resume.
Not to be overlooked, Lange closed out a tremendous weekend with six more hits and eight more innings of standout pitching across the twin bill. The redshirt junior from Plano, Texas, finished the weekend slashing .667/.706/1.333Â with four extra-base hits and eight RBIs, in addition to compiling a 3-0 mark with a 0.88 ERA and 18 strikeouts across 16 innings.
GW 9, George Mason 0 (6 innings):Â Lange's sterling individual offensive effort helped the Colonials cruise in the opener.
Lange started the scoring with an RBI triple in the first, tripled again in the third before scoring on Alessandra Ponce's homer and then blasted her own three-run shot in the fifth to push the lead to 8-0.
Ponce's long ball was her second in as many days and her fourth of the season.
Jessica Linquist supplied a pair of hits, including an RBI double in the second inning, while Sidney Bloomfield recorded three hits and scored twice. Faith Weber provided a pair of hits with an RBI and a run scored.
In the circle, Lange and Weber tossed three scoreless innings a piece, combining on a three-hit shutout.
GW 8, George Mason 2:Â Cone powered the Buff and Blue in the victory that clinched the weekend sweep.
The senior from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., singled in the opening inning as part of a rally that pushed across the game's first run. She lofted a solo shot to lead off the third inning before coming through the next inning with the line-drive grand slam to make it 6-0.
In the sixth, Cone did it again, sending the first pitch of the at-bat over the left field fence for her third long ball of the game. The two-run shot also secured a single-game program record for total bases (13).
Lange had three more hits in the game and also picked up the victory in the circle with six strong innings in which she allowed one run on five hits with six Ks.
Alexa Williams recorded a pair of hits, including an RBI single in the first.
UP NEXT:Â GW is set to return to the Mount Vernon Campus next weekend, hosting Saint Louis for four A-10 contests over two days.
