Buff & Blue face Billikens in A-10 set
Note: Saturday's start time has been revised due to forecasted rain.
GW softball hits the road to Saint Louis this weekend, looking to continue its perfect run in Atlantic 10 play.
The Colonials and Billikens are set to play a pair of doubleheaders with a 5 p.m. start on Saturday and a noon first pitch on Sunday. All four games are slated to be broadcast via ESPN+.
Entering the series, GW sits atop the Atlantic 10's Central Pod at 12-0, while SLU ranks third in the standings at 9-7.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW was dominant last Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader sweep at Saint Joseph's, highlighted by Sierra Lange's no-hitter in the opener.
Lange shutdown the Hawks over five innings in an 8-0 run-rule victory for the program's fifth all-time no-hitter and first since 2018. Faith Weber went deep twice in the contest, including a first-inning grand slam.
The Buff and Blue won the second game, 16-6 in six innings, with Jenna Cone and Jessica Linquist hitting two homers apiece. Lange went 4-for-5 at the plate as part of a 16-hit attack.
GW has now won six straight games and 17 of its past 18. Of its 22 total wins, 13 have come via run rule.
RISING ROOKIE:Â Alexa Williams carries a 14-game hitting streak into this series, a stretch during which she's bumped her season average up to .376 (32-for-85). The streak ranks tied for third in program history and is the longest run for a member of the Buff and Blue since Linquist hit in 28 straight contests during the 2019 season.
A rookie from El Cajon, Calif., Williams has been excellent throughout the season, ranking third on the team with 30 RBIs and tied for third with 14 extra-base hits (seven doubles, two triples, five home runs). She has also been flawless in the outfield, handling all 18 of her chances without an error.
POWER SURGE:Â With seven more home runs across two games last weekend, GW has 43 home runs on the season, just one away from the program single-season record set in 2019.
GW is averaging 1.48 home runs per game to rank 15th nationally. The Buff & Blue have flashed impressive power up-and-down the lineup to pile up 43 homers in 29 games putting them well ahead of the pace set in 2019 when they clubbed 44 long balls over 62 games.
Cone leads the way with 11 homers on the season to rank second in the A-10. Weber is next on the list with a career-high nine. She's also the first student-athlete in program history to hit two grand slams in one season.
SCOUTING THE BILLIKENS:Â GW aims to complete a season sweep of SLU after taking four games on the Mount Vernon Campus last month. In that series, the Colonials outscored the Billikens, 42-6, thanks to a .442 team batting average and eight home runs on the weekend.
SLU is 16-22 on the season following a four-game conference sweep of St. Bonaventure last weekend and a midweek win over Southern Illinois. Gabbie Kowalik has been one of the top hitters in the league with a .385/.455/.823 slash line and 20 extra-base hits, while Aubrey Hacke (3.19 ERA in 94Â 2/3 innings) and Chloe Wendling (3.50 ERA in 90Â innings) lead the squad with seven wins apiece.
