Buff and Blue run winning streak to nine games
WASHINGTONÂ - GW softball continued its unbeaten start to Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, beating Saint Louis twice on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Buff and Blue won the opener 9-1 in five innings before adding a 9-4 victory later in the day to run their overall winning streak to nine games and their conference record to 6-0.
Jenna Cone posted a team-high five hits in the twin bill, including a pair of home runs in the second game, while Faith Weber and Alexa Williams drove in five runs apiece on the day.
GW 9, Saint Louis 1 (5 innings):Â After falling behind 1-0 the top of the first, the Colonials scored the next nine runs to secure the run-rule victory.
Williams provided the key hit in the bottom of the first, bringing home Jessica Linquist, Cone and Amber Lotz with a bases-loaded double. The first-year later came around to score on an error to make it 4-1.
The Buff and Blue put the game out of reach with a four-run third, highlighted by Weber's two-run homer.
Four straight Colonials reached to open the frame, including extra-base hits from Weber, Hannah Eslick and Olivia Vinyard. Cone's two-out RBI single later pushed the advantage to 9-1.
That was plenty of offense for Sierra Lange, who was dominant after allowing a game-opening triple. The redshirt junior hurler recorded her first six outs via strikeout before finishing with 10 Ks to match a season high, and she allowed just one hit after the opening frame.
Williams finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Cone also provided a pair of hits in the opener as part of a nine-hit attack.
Weber's long ball was her fifth of the season to set a new career high.
GW 9, Saint Louis 4:Â Weber did it all in game two, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs while picking up the victory in the circle.
Cone helped Weber's cause with a pair of solo blasts, the 63rd and 64th of her decorated career.
GW again wasted no time jumping on the Billikens, putting up a three-spot in the opening inning. Cone launched her first homer of the day before Weber came up clutch with a two-out, two-run single.
Weber's two-out RBI single in the third pushed the lead to 4-0 in the third before Cone's second homer and a two-run double from Williams extended the advantage to 7-0 in the fifth.
Saint Louis would strike for three runs off Weber in the top of the sixth to edge closer, but the Colonials answered with a pair in the bottom half, including a successful squeeze bunt from Maggie Greco, to create additional breathing room.
Adding in last Sunday's three-homer game at George Mason, Cone has now recorded five round-trippers in her past three contests.
With their multi-RBI performances, Weber and Williams ended the day tied for the team lead with 22 RBIs apiece.
Alessandra Ponce (2-for-3, one run) and Lange (2-for-4, two runs) also recorded multi-hit efforts in Saturday's second game.
In the circle, Weber allowed three runs on six hits over six innings to improve to 5-1 on the season.
UP NEXT:Â GW and Saint Louis are set to conclude the series with another doubleheader at The Vern on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
