Colonials split Saturday doubleheader
BALTIMOREÂ - Highlighted by three-run home runs from Jessica Linquist and Alessandra Ponce, GW softball exploded for 13 runs in the opening inning on the way to an 18-3 run-rule victory over UMBC in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader.
Following a 4-3 defeat in the opener, the Buff and Blue bounced back with an emphatic start to game two, sending 19 batters to the plate in a frame that featured nine hits, three walks and two errors to quickly overwhelm the Retrievers.
It was the most runs in an inning for GW since putting up a 14-spot in the second inning of a win over NC Central on Feb. 9, 2008.
GW 18, UMBC 3 (5 innings):Â The Colonials flexed their offensive muscle in that memorable start to the second game.
Linquist was hit by a pitch leading off and came home on a UMBC error one batter later to get the scoring started, and the Buff and Blue were far from finished. At one point in the onslaught, 10 straight Colonials reached base.
Sierra Lange, Alexa Williams, Olivia Vinyard and Amber Lotz knocked in runs to extend the lead to 6-0 before Linquist provided her three-run shot over the left field fence. Following a pair of walks, Ponce connected on her three-run blast to make it 12-0.
The Colonials would load the bases again and add an RBI single from Vinyard before the Retrievers were able to retire the side.
GW tacked on another run in the second on a solo home run from Jenna Cone and four more in the fourth to reach a season-high 18 runs in the five-inning contest.
It was a team effort with 13 Colonials recording hits and 10 knocking in at least one run.
Lange, Williams, Sidney Bloomfield, Abby Schaub and Alena Ramirez recorded multi-hit efforts in the 18-hit attack, while Lange and Cone each scored three times.
Linquist's homer was her first of the season and the ninth of her career, and Ponce went deep for the second time this spring and the 12th time in her career. Cone added on to her program-record long ball total with the 59th of her career.
In the circle, GW used a group effort to close out the Retrievers with Faith Weber going the first two innings before turning it over to Megan Osterhaus and Williams. Osterhaus was credited with her first win of the season after allowing one run in two innings of relief.
UMBC 4, GW 3: The Colonials came up short in the opener, despite the first home run of the season from Hannah Eslick.
Playing just down the road from her hometown of Glen Burnie, Md., Eslick put the Colonials in front with her two-run shot in the fourth inning, but the Retrievers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning before adding another in the fifth.
GW got one back on Linquist's two-out RBI single in the sixth scoring Bloomfield to pull within a run, but the Buff and Blue couldn't complete the comeback.
Lange went the distance in the circle for GW, setting a season high with nine strikeouts, but she was outdueled by UMBC's Courtney Coppersmith, who worked around seven walks by striking out 11 in her complete-game victory.
Linquist reached in all four of her plate appearances in the opener with the RBI single and three walks.
UP NEXT:Â The Colonials and Retrievers close out the weekend with another twin bill on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
