Colonials completed winning weekend with sweep
BALTIMOREÂ - GW softball completed a winning weekend on the road by sweeping a Sunday doubleheader at UMBC.
Hannah Eslick's solo home run and a shutout from Sierra Lange powered the Buff and Blue to a 1-0 win in the opener before they found an offensive surge to take the second game by run rule, 14-4.
For the weekend, GW won three of four games vs. the Retrievers to improve to 8-6 on the season, heading into next weekend's Atlantic 10-opening series at George Mason.
With her gem in Sunday's opener, Lange tied the program all-time record in style with her 50th career victory.
GW 1, UMBC 0:Â Lange battled 2019 America East Pitcher of the Year Courtney Coppersmith for the second straight day, and this time came out on top by blanking the Retrievers.
The game stayed scoreless into the fourth inning when Eslick continued her strong weekend by smashing her second homer in as many days over the center field fence.
That was enough for Lange, who allowed just four hits while recording a season-high 10 strikeouts. In the seventh, the redshirt junior hurler worked around a lead-off double by recording three straight outs, the final one via a swinging K to strand the UMBC runner at second.
With the 50th win of her career, Lange tied Sarah Costlow (2015-18) atop the program's all-time list. She improved to 4-5 on the season and lowered her season ERA to 2.52 in 50.0 innings.
Coppersmith limited GW to just three hits, but Eslick's swing was the difference. Lange and Olivia Vinyard also posted singles for the Buff and Blue.
GW 14, UMBC 4 (5 innings):Â The Colonials jumped on top early in game two with a three-run first and then pulled away late by scoring eight times in the top of the fifth to earn its fifth run-rule win of the season.
GW plated its first run on an error three batters into the game and then added on thanks to Faith Weber's two-out, two-run single. The lead reached 5-0 on RBI hits from Alessandra Ponce and Alexa Williams in the top of the third.
After UMBC answered with four runs in its half of the third to pull within a run, the Colonials dug in and scored the game's final nine runs.
The visitors sent 13 hitters to the plate in their eight-run fifth, highlighted by Jessica Linquist's second home run of the weekend. Vinyard, Ponce, Williams and Eslick also drove home runs in the explosive frame.
Lange and Bloomfield paced the 16-hit attack with three knocks apiece, while Williams, Ponce, Linquist, Weber and Eslick all drove in multiple runs.
Lange's first three-hit performance of the season included a fourth-inning triple and a fifth-inning double.
Weber earned her third win of the season with a complete game in the circle.
Playing in her 205th career game, Jenna Cone became the program's all-time leader, passing Rochelle Draper (2015-18).
Up Next:Â GW is set to make the short trip to Revolutionary Rival George Mason next weekend for its first four games of A-10 play.
