Colonials face Villanova & UMBC
Looking to build on four straight wins, GW softball is set for three doubleheaders over the next four days, starting with Thursday's twin bill vs. Villanova on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Buff and Blue will welcome the Big East favorite Wildcats to the nation's capital for two games, beginning at 1 p.m., with both contests streamed via ESPN+.
This weekend, Head Coach Shane Winkler's squad heads to Baltimore for back-to-back doubleheaders vs. UMBC, both with 1 p.m. first pitches.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW is coming off a dominant weekend vs. Mount St. Mary's in which the Buff and Blue went 4-0, claimed three wins by run-rule and outscored the Mountaineers 40-2.
Over the four games, GW hit .440 as a team with nine home runs and compiled a 0.61 staff ERA with 24 strikeouts in 23 innings.
Faith Weber led the way with a tremendous all-around effort: The graduate student from New Egypt, N.J., showcased her power at the plate with four home runs and 11 RBIs in the series while also posting a 2-0 record with a 0.00 ERA in two starts in the circle.
Alexa Williams was honored as Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after tallying at least one hit in all four contests and posting a .600/.636/1.400 slash line with two home runs and 10 total RBIs.
A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER:Â With back-to-back shutouts last Saturday, GW gave up zero runs across a doubleheader for the sixth time in program and first since blanking Howard twice at The Vern on Feb. 28, 2018.
Weber cracked a two-run home run in Sunday's finale and then followed an inning later with a grand slam to pile up six RBIs, equaling a program record along with Hilary King (2007) and Autumn Taylor (2013).
It was Weber's second career grand slam after also hitting one last March to complete a run-rule win over Monmouth. She joins teammate Jenna Cone (three) and Chrysanthi Halkiotis (two) on the list of Colonials with multiple grand slams.
Adding two-homer efforts from Williams (Saturday game two) and Weber (Sunday game two), GW has now had 24 multi-home run games in program history.
RECORD WATCH:Â After winning both of her starts vs. the Mount, Sierra Lange owns 48 career wins and enters this weekend just two behind Sarah Costlow ('18) for the top spot on the program's all-time list. For her career, the redshirt junior hurler is 48-25 with a 3.00 ERA in 84 appearances (69 starts).
RECORD WATCH II:Â Jenna Cone had six hits last weekend, including a pair of home runs, to push her career total to 225. The graduate student from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., enters Thursday's doubleheader just 12 hits behind Megan Linn ('17) for most in program history. She also has 156 career runs scored, eight away from Linn's program record there.
Cone's 58 home runs (T-5th) and 208 RBIs (3rd) are already both program records and rank among the top five nationally among active student-athletes.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:Â Villanova (1-6) earned its first win of the season on Sunday, defeating Hofstra, 5-4, on a walk-off single by Ally Jones.
The Wildcats are led by 2019 Big East Player of the Year Paige Rauch, who is regarded among the top two-way contributors in the nation. The senior earned the victory with a complete-game effort vs. Hofstra and also leads the squad offensively so far with a .368 average and a pair of home runs.
UMBC opened its season last week with five victories in six games vs. Coppin State and Delaware State. The 2019 America East Pitcher of the Year, Courtney Coppersmith won all three of her starts, allowing no runs over 17 innings while recording 41 strikeouts.
