Buff & Blue come from behind to take second game
WASHINGTON - Jenna Cone came through in the clutch, delivering a tie-breaking two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to help GW softball beat Villanova, 6-2, on Thursday afternoon to salvage a split of a competitive doubleheader on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Buff and Blue's come-from-behind victory followed a pitchers' duel that went the Wildcats' way, 1-0, to start the day.
GW 6, Villanova 2 (Game 2):Â After starting the day with 11 scoreless innings, the Colonials finally broke through offensively late in the finale of the twin bill.
With GW down 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Alessandra Ponce delivered a two-out, two-run single to bring home Sidney Bloomfield and Sierra Lange to tie the score.
Lange entered in relief in the top of the six, stranding a pair of runners to keep the game tied. That set the stage for Cone's heroics: The graduate student from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., laced a single into left field with the bases full to score Bloomfield and Faith Weber and give the home team the lead.
GW would take advantage of an error to plate two more insurance runs in the frame to set the final margin.
In relief after a quality start from Weber, Lange got the final five outs to pick up her 49th career victory, one shy of Sarah Costlow's program record. The redshirt junior from Plano, Texas, finished the day with one run allowed in 8 2/3 innings of work.
Jessica Linquist reached in all four of her plate appearances with a single and three walks, while Weber and Bloomfield both picked up a pair of hits, including singles from both as part of GW's decisive four-run sixth.
Villanova 1, GW 0 (Game 1):Â Lange battled Paige Rauch pitch for pitch in the opener, but Ryan Henry's solo home run in the second inning proved to be the difference for the Wildcats.
Lange pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing just a run on four hits with four strikeouts.
Rauch ceded just a pair of infield singles while striking out nine in her complete-game shutout.
Cone reached in all three of her plate appearances in the opener, including a single in the fourth that turned out to be the Buff and Blue's final hit.
Up Next:Â GW is slated to play a pair of doubleheaders at UMBC this weekend with first pitch at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
