Colonials host UMBC, Coppin State at the Tuck
WASHINGTON - GW baseball wraps up its six-game homestand this week by welcoming UMBC and Coppin State to Tucker Field at Barcroft Park on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Both games are set for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch.
IT STARTS WITH PITCHING: GW's 4-2 start has been predicated by its display on the mound, ranking third in the A-10 with a 2.50 ERA. The Colonials have allowed four runs or fewer in all but one game this season with two quality starts. At the back end of the bullpen, senior Keagan McGinnis is one of seven qualifying pitchers in the A-10 yet to allow an earned run. He also ranks third in the nation with a 19.89 K/9 ratio.
GRIP IT AND RIPP IT: Redshirt sophomore Derek Ripp paces the Colonial offense through six games with his .389 average, ranking 14th in the A-10. The first baseman recorded a pair of multi-hit affairs over the weekend against Marist and now has a team-best three games with two or more hits so far this year.
ABOUT THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC opened its season by being swept in a four-game series at Charlotte over the weekend. The Retrievers managed just one run in the first three games before piling up six in Sunday's finale. Christian Torres is the team's top performer offensively, hitting .286 with two triples and a double.
The two teams split the season series a year ago with UMBC taking a 14-12 victory at the Tuck before GW returned the favor with an 11-6 triumph in Baltimore.
ABOUT THE EAGLES: Coppin State is 0-4 on the year, but did not play last weekend after falling in the midweek at Navy, 6-1. Matt Day (.364) and Justin Oakley (.313) have been the standout performers offensively with Oakley racking up three extra-base hits in the season's first four games.
GW has never lost to Coppin, winning all 35 matchups, including 7-1 and 12-2 triumphs in two meetings a year ago.
