Colonials run win streak to three in a row on Tuesday afternoon
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball delivered head coach Gregg Ritchie his 200th win in the Buff & Blue on Tuesday afternoon, stringing together clutch hits and a strong day on the hill for a 4-2 win over UMBC.
Ritchie, who is in his eighth year coaching his alma mater, became the third coach in program history to eclipse 200 wins. He needs three wins to pass Steve Mrowka (2005-12) for the second-most victories at the helm of GW.
The victory was made possible thanks to the impressive collegiate debut from Connor Harris on the mound. The first-year silenced the Retrievers over five innings, allowing just an unearned run on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Harris was backed up by single runs in the first on an RBI single from senior Steve Barmakian and the third on a sacrifice fly by junior Tyler Hix.
Senior Andrew Wheeler kept UMBC at bay, allowing GW to tack on a pair of insurance tallies in the last of the eighth via RBI doubles from redshirt sophomore Derek Ripp and sophomore Cade Fergus.
Wheeler, who didn't allow a hit in 2.2 frames, gave way to junior Trevor Kuncl, who earned his third save of the season by recording the final four outs.
Fergus led the way offensively by reaching base four times with two hits and two walks and scoring a pair of runs. First-year Stephen DiTomaso became the second Colonial this year to notch a three-hit game with his 3-for-5 day.
GW is right back in action on Wednesday, welcoming Coppin State to the Tuck for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch.
