Levin and Hix combine to drive in five
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball put up six runs in their first two at-bats and cruised to its fourth straight triumph, 7-4, over Coppin State on Wednesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
The Colonials came out of the gates hot to erase a 2-0 hole, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings. Junior Tyler Hix quickly tied the game in the home half of the first with a two-run double and scored one batter later on a fielding error to put GW up, 3-2.
In the second, sophomore Noah Levin grew the lead to three with a two-run single, kicking off a 2-for-4 day at the dish with three total driven in. Junior Domenic Boselli then tacked on an RBI single to give the Colonials a four-run edge.
From there it was the star pitching of sophomore Rich Pfluger and senior Jaret Edwards that kept the Eagles at bay. Pfluger authored 2.1 scoreless innings, retiring the first six he faced with a pair of strikeouts.
Edwards, who was credited with his first win of the year, came on in the fifth and struck out six of the first nine batters he faced, working around a walk and a hit batter.
Senior Keagan McGinnis and Hix combined to get the final six outs with Hix getting out of a mini-jam in the ninth inning with the tying run at the plate.
Levin and Boselli each collected a pair of hits while Hix scored two runs and drove in two as part of his two-way day, also recording two outs on the mound.
GW now hits the road for a challenging road series this weekend at No. 19 Tennessee. The Volunteers are ranked in four of the six major college baseball polls and have started the year 8-0. First pitch in the series opener on Friday is set for 4 p.m. with the game broadcast on SEC Network Plus.
