Baseball Rumbles With Richmond This Weekend

Colonials and Spiders tangle in another pivotal A-10 series
WASHINGTON -Â
WASHINGTON -Â GW baseball is set to head to Richmond, Va., for the second straight weekend, this time to take on the Richmond Spiders for a three-game A-10 series. The series starts Friday with a 3 p.m. first pitch, followed by a 1 p.m. start on Saturday and noon first pitch Sunday.
IN THE MID-WEEK:Â GW finished the mid-week portion of its schedule with two wins over Penn and Coppin State at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. The Colonials posted a 10-3 mark in Tuesday and Wednesday affairs this year thanks to the 8-4 win over the Quakers and the 12-2 triumph over the Eagles. Junior Steve Barmakian had five hits in the two games, leading a trio of Colonials (Tyler Hix and Dom D'Alessandro) who hit at least .500.
A LOOK AT THE STANDINGS:Â The Buff & Blue find themselves on the outside looking in at the A-10 Tournament with six conference games remaining but still with a reasonable chance at qualification. GW is 2.5 games out of the seventh and final spot, currently occupied by Saint Joseph's at 8-7. The Hawks have nine conference games remaining and the tiebreaker over GW, leaving the Colonials' tragic number (combined GW losses and Saint Joseph's wins) at six.
STRONG ON THE HILL:Â GW's momentum on the mound has continued through the beginning of May, with its starters having allowed three earned runs or fewer in 13 of the last 16 games. The Colonial starters own a 3.32 ERA in the stretch, but taking out the three outliers reveals a sparkling 1.86 ERA. Overall, GW's team ERA has dropped from 5.54 to 5.20, its lowest point since March 24.
RIPP-ING AND ROLLING:Â Redshirt freshman Derek Ripp extended his hitting streak to 15 games with hits in both games this week, which equals the fourth-longest hitting streak in program history and marks second-longest run this season (Nate Fassnacht, 17). Primarily serving as the DH during the stretch, Ripp is hitting .421 (24-for-57) in his last 15 games with six doubles, nine runs scored and seven RBI. Ripp has increased his average 86 points to .315 since starting the streak with a three-double game at UMBC on April 9.
