Colonials win second straight series opener, topping Spiders, 5-3
RICHMOND, Va. -Â First-year Noah Levin launched a two-run home run in the top of the 11th inning, sending GW baseball to a crucial 5-3 win over Richmond on Friday afternoon at Pitt Field.
Levin's fourth dinger of the year followed a leadoff single from senior Dom D'Alessandro in the frame, pushing GW ahead for good. Senior Pat Knight struck out two to help retire the Spiders in the bottom half and secure the series-opening triumph.
The Colonials overcame a decent amount of adversity to come away with the win, surviving a two-run rally from Richmond in the bottom of the ninth. The Spiders tied the game at three with consecutive two-out RBI singles, but sophomore Trevor Kuncl battled back with a strikeout to force extra innings.
The day started off in a similar fashion to the way it ended with junior Nate Fassnacht blasting a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Buff & Blue a 2-0 lead three batters into the game. Fassnacht added an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning, growing the Colonials' advantage to 3-0.Â
Meanwhile, junior Elliott Raimo was mowing down the Spiders, allowing just three baserunners through the first five innings. Raimo ceded a run in the sixth and came out for the seventh before departing after allowing a pair of base hits.
Despite not factoring in the decision, Raimo still tossed a quality start, yielding a run on six hits in 6.1 frames with seven strikeouts. Junior Keagan McGinnis put out the fire in the seventh and pitched into the ninth.
The Spiders consecutive two-out singles against Kuncl tied the game, but the sophomore kept the game afloat with a strikeout. After a scoreless 10th inning, GW came out on top thanks to Levin's round-tripper.
Fassnacht, Levin and sophomore Tyler Hix accounted for nine of GW's 10 hits on the day, each posting a three-hit affair. The win was GW's third in extra frames this season.
GW will go for the series win on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
