Seven-run third inning keys Mountaineers to victory
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -Â Facing one of the top pitching staffs in the nation, GW baseball was held in check in the series opener against #17 West Virginia on Thursday night, 10-1.
The teams exchanged runs early in the contest with WVU scoring in the last of the first and GW answering with an RBI single from sophomore Tyler Hix in the top of the second to even the score.
However, the Mountaineers got to senior starter Nate Woods in the third inning, scoring seven runs to take an 8-1 lead. The Colonials were able to force WVU starter Alex Manoah, a candidate for the Golden Spikes Award, out after 3.2 frames, but were unable to cross the plate the remainder of the night.
Hix and senior Dom D'Alessandro led the Colonial offense with a pair of hits each as GW racked up eight singles on the night. A quartet of Buff & Blue hurlers - Kevin Sylvestri, Alex Kobersteen, Emmett Harkins and Cal Stalzer - limited WVU to two runs over the final five innings at the dish.
The two teams square off in the middle game of the series on Friday evening with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
