Colonials reignite series with former conference rival
WASHINGTON -Â Fresh off a sweep of St. Bonaventure to close out A-10 play, the GW baseball team is set for its final weekend of the year, traveling to Morgantown, W. Va., to take on the #17 West Virginia Mountaineers. The series starts on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., followed by a 6:30 p.m. start on Friday and a 2 p.m. first pitch on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW finished off conference play in emphatic fashion with a sweep of St. Bonaventure last weekend at Tucker Field. The Colonials led the first two games wire-to-wire before coming from behind with a dramatic walk-off in the 10th inning of the finale to secure the sweep of the Bonnies. Four different Colonials hit at least .500 in the series with senior Dom D'Alessandro belting three home runs and driving in five.
RECORD WATCH:Â Junior Nate Fassnacht tied the single-season school record for doubles last weekend with his 23rd and needs just one to set the new mark. He also became just the fifth player in program history with 60 or more RBI in a single year and currently ranks fourth in total bases (146), seventh in runs (58) and 10th in hits (82).
Sophomore Tyler Hix is just two doubles behind Fassnacht with 21 to his ledger, while first-year Cade Fergus has 16 two-baggers, tied for ninth-most in a single year. Fergus has also scored the sixth-most runs in one season (59). D'Alesssandro is t-8th in hits (83) and t-9th in home runs (12).
THE TOP TANDEM:Â D'Alessandro and Fassnacht have proven to be the most potent offensive duo in the Atlantic 10, leading the league in a combined seven categories. In his senior year, D'Alessandro leads the league in average (.415), hits (83), home runs (12) and OBP (.502), while Fassnacht paces the circuit in RBI (60), slugging (.570) and total bases (146).
Overall, the two show up a combined 25 times in the league's top five rankings between 15 different categories.
RAIMO ROLLING:Â Junior Elliott Raimo continued his strong finish to his junior campaign on Friday against St. Bonaventure, striking out a season-high 10 in 6.2 innings. It was the fourth career double-digit strikeout game for Raimo and the second done by a Colonial this season (Nate Woods, Feb. 22 vs. Saint Peter's). Raimo has authored three quality starts in his last four outings with 33 strikeouts in 25.0 innings, limiting opponents to just 18 hits in that span with a 2.52 ERA.
ABOUT THE MOUNTAINEERS:Â West Virginia comes into the final series of the year ranked in all six national polls, climbing as high as #17 by Perfect Game. WVU is 32-18 overall following its 9-4 win over rival Pitt on Tuesday. The Mountaineers finished 13-11 in the Big 12 with ranked series wins over #11 Texas Tech, #19 Oklahoma and #23 Oklahoma State.
WVU is headlined by its pitching staff that is eighth nationally in hits allowed per nine innings and ranks 27th in ERA (3.63). Nick Snyder and Alex Manoah both rank among the nation's top 30 in H/9 and K/9. Offensively, Tyler Doanes leads the team with a .301 average and .895 OPS for a squad that hits .249 overall.
