D’Alessandro launches team-leading 13th homer
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -Â GW baseball wrapped up its 2019 campaign on Saturday afternoon at #17 West Virginia, falling 13-2 to finish the year with a 30-24 record.
Despite the setback, the Colonials finished the year with 30 or more wins for the third straight year, completing the feat for the first time since six straight 30-win seasons from 2000-05.
As he has done most of the season, senior Dom D'Alessandro spearheaded the attack for GW, smacking his team-best 13th home run of the year, a two-run shot in the fourth. D'Alessandro finished his final game going 3-for-4 to raise his season-long average to .423. He won the A-10 batting crown as the only hitter in the league to bat over .400.
WVU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the first inning to spark the victory and the abbreviated two-game sweep. The Mountaineers added nine runs from the fifth through the eighth to account for the final margin.
Senior Pat Knight tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief in his final career outing to highlight the day on the hill for the Colonials.
GW says goodbye to six seniors, but is anticipated to potentially return eight of its nine members of Saturday's starting lineup next season and could bring up to 36 of its 54 starts from the rotation back for 2020.
