Jenna Cone homered in both victories vs. Saint Louis
WASHINGTONÂ - Jenna Cone homered in both games of a doubleheader Saturday, powering George Washington softball to a dominant sweep of Saint Louis on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials beat the Billikens, 7-0, in the opener before taking the second game, 9-1, in five innings. They piled up their 16 runs via 19 hits, including nine for extra bases.
Cone hit a two-run homer in the first game and then launched a solo shot in game two for her 16th long ball of the season. With the first blast, the junior slugger passed Victoria Valos to become the program's all-time leader in RBIs. She's now driven in 52 runs in 40 games this spring and totaled 172 for her career.Â
Sierra Lange dazzled in the circle, allowing one run on three hits over nine innings. The sophomore from Texas earned victories in both games, pushing her season total to 17, a new program single-season record.
GW (29-11, 5-3 A-10) has a chance to complete the Atlantic 10 series sweep Sunday at the Vern.
GW 7, Saint Louis 0:Â Cone and Alessandra Ponce each hit two-run home runs in the third inning to send the Colonials on their way to a comfortable victory.
Cone's line drive over the center field fence broke a scoreless stalemate before Ponce followed with a towering shot to left center to bring home Priscilla Martinez to make it 4-0. It was Ponce's sixth homer of the season, which ranks second on the team.
An inning later, the Colonials extended the advantage to 6-0 when the Saint Louis left fielder couldn't haul in Cone's deep fly ball. Hannah Eslick and Jess Linquist raced home on the error.
The Colonials plated their final run in the bottom of the sixth with Linquist providing an RBI single that extended her program-record hitting streak.
Cone went 2-for-3 with a walk, plus two RBIs and a run scored, to pace the Buff and Blue's 10-hit attack. Martinez and Ponce also finished with two hits apiece, while Linquist reached twice and scored a pair of runs.
Lange and Kaitlin Buff combined on GW's fourth shutout of the season.Â
Lange went the first four innings, yielding just one hit and one walk. Buff pitched the final three innings to earn her second save of the season. The junior navigated a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to keep the Billikens scoreless.
GW 9, Saint Louis 1:Â In completing the sweep, the Colonials turned a tight game into a rout with three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
The GW lead was 2-1 in the fourth when the bottom of the order provided a jumpstart. Back-to-back hits from Ponce and Elena Shelepak started the rally with hits before Morgan Kummer, Faith Weber and Linquist drove in runs.
The first four Colonials reached in the fifth, highlighted by run-scoring doubles from Ponce and Shelepak. They ended it on Sidney Bloomfield's two-out RBI single to score Kummer.
Cone staked GW to a first-inning lead with her second homer of the day, while Ponce added a pair of doubles in the second game. Shelepak had two hits and drove in two runs in the victory.
Linquist singled in the third inning to push her record hitting streak to 27 games. She's also reached base in a program-record 36 straight games, breaking a mark set by Cone last spring.
In the circle, Lange was nearly flawless again. The sophomore allowed a solo home run in the fourth but otherwise held the Billikens in check. She ceded just two hits and struck out three over five innings in the complete game victory.
UP NEXT:Â GW and Saint Louis wrap the series Sunday with a noon first pitch. The Colonials will travel to UMass next weekend to continue A-10 play.
