Colonials look to improve A-10 positioning vs. Billikens
The Colonials (27-11, 3-3 A-10) and Billikens (9-22, 4-3) will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon before closing the set Sunday with another noon start.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW finished its non-conference schedule Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of Delaware State. The Colonials won the opener, 6-5, in eight innings on Jessica Linquist's walk-off RBI single before taking the second game, 6-2.
GW posted 14 extra-base hits across the doubleheader, including home runs from Linquist, Jenna Cone and Alessandra Ponce.
Cone showcased her power in the first game with two triples to tie the program's single-game record and a solo homer.
Ponce went 3-for-3 in game two with a double and a two-run shot.
Sierra Lange earned her 15th win of the season with three scoreless innings of relief in the opener, while Megan Osterhaus, Faith Weber and Kaitlin Buff combined on a gem, limiting the Hornets to two runs on four hits in the finale.
SUPERB STREAK:Â In Wednesday's second game, Linquist singled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to extend her program-record hitting streak to 25 games.
The junior from New Jersey is hitting .392 (31-for-79) with a .500 on-base percentage since the streak began on March 3 in a win over UNC Greensboro. She's tallied 12 extra-base hits, including a team-high nine doubles, with 26 runs scored and 20 RBIs during the run.
Linquist has a chance at more history this weekend. She's reached base in 34 straight games, one shy of Jenna Cone's program record, which was set last spring.
RECORD WATCH:Â Cone knocked in a pair of runs in Wednesday's opener to push her season RBI total to 49, which leads the A-10 and ranks fifth nationally.
Cone enters the weekend with 169 career RBIs, one back of the program record held by Victoria Valos.
In addition to leading the A-10 in RBIs, Cone also paces the conference in home runs (14), extra-base hits (24), total bases (106) and slugging percentage (.835). Beyond being the program's career leader in long balls (44), she also owns the three highest single-season totals all-time.
RECORD WATCH II:Â Sierra Lange is in position to break several individual single-season marks, both at the plate and in the circle.
Lange enters the series with 15 wins, one shy of Sarah Costlow's record set during the 2015 season. Her three saves are also tied for the most by a Colonial in a single season with Courtney Martin ('13) and Kara Clauss ('12).
As a batter, Lange has recorded 57 hits through 38 games. The sophomore from Texas is just eight back of the single-season mark held by GW Athletics Hall of Famer Elana Meyers Taylor ('06) and Marta Fuentes ('18).
With a .429 batting average to date, Lange is also on pace to best the GW single-season mark of .414, which was also established by Meyers Taylor in 2006. Her five triples rank tied for second behind Meyers Taylor (7), as well.
ELITE COMPANY:Â With a .355 team batting average, GW remains among the national leaders. The Colonials currently sit fourth nationally behind only Oklahoma (.368), Florida State (.367) and Virginia Tech (.357).
The Colonials have piled up 380 hits through 38 games, collecting at least seven hits in all but one contest this season. They've reached double figures 21 times, highlighted by a trio of 14-hit efforts.
GW owns five of the top eight individual batting averages in the conference with Lange (.429), Cone (.409), Linquist (.405), Marta Fuentes (.393) and Sidney Bloomfield (.391).
SCOUTING SAINT LOUIS:Â The Billikens sit just ahead of GW in the A-10 standings after splitting a doubleheader vs. UMass last weekend. They've hit .351 as a team in their seven conference contests, paced by Gabbie Kowalik's .478 mark.
GW took two of three at Saint Louis to close out the 2018 regular season with both victories via run rule.
ON DECK:Â GW travels to UMass next weekend (April 13-14) for another A-10 series. The Colonials are back on the Mount Vernon Campus on April 17 hosting George Mason for a midweek doubleheader.
