Colonials tangle with top team in the A-10 standings
WASHINGTON - GW baseball closes out its April A-10 schedule with the first of two straight weekends in Richmond, Va., traveling to battle VCU this weekend at The Diamond. The series starts on Friday evening with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch, followed by a 2 p.m. start Saturday and a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT: The Buff & Blue belted their way to an 18-6 triumph over Georgetown on Wednesday in a true team offensive effort. All nine GW starters recorded at least one hit and scored at least one run while eight of the nine delivered at least one RBI. Senior Dom D'Alessandro tied the team lead with his eighth long ball of the year as part of a four-hit night. First-year Cade Fergus enjoyed a four-hit day as well.
CHANGE OF ATTACK: GW has relied on its offense for a majority of the season, and rightfully so with the Colonials consistently ranking among the nation's elite in scoring (currently 23rd as of Thursday). Recently has been the pitching staff leading the way for GW with junior Jaret Edwards providing another solid start Wednesday with 5.1 scoreless innings on the hill.
GW starters have allowed three earned runs or fewer in nine of the last 11 games and hold a combined 2.74 ERA in the stretch. Taking out the two outliers, the ERA drops to a sparkling 1.62.
NEED THE BATS: Wednesday's 18-run, 18-hit outburst was a welcome sight for GW. The team's team batting average had been above .295 for 24 straight games before dropping to .292 on Saturday. It rebounded back to .295 on Wednesday.
DOM-INATION: D'Alessandro's four-hit day Wednesday raised his season average to .426, its highest point since April 12 at UMass. The senior has posted three straight multi-hit games (9-for-14, .643) with homers in back-to-back games, four runs scored and five RBI. He is currently fifth in the nation in batting and sixth in hits, just six off the top pace in the NCAA.
ABOUT THE RAMS: VCU comes in to action leading the A-10 with an 11-4 conference mark. However, the Rams have dropped three of their last four matchups, including two of three to cross-town rival Richmond last weekend. The two teams are 1-2 in most every offensive category in the league with the Rams and Colonials both averaging 7.5 runs per game. On the hill, VCU holds a 3.77 team ERA, third best in the circuit.
SERIES HISTORY: VCU holds a 21-14 edge in the all-time series, including taking two of three from the Colonials in Arlington last season. GW is looking for its first series win over the Rams since 2013.
