Raimo and Kuncl hold league’s top offense to one run
RICHMOND, Va. - GW baseball began its critical three-game series at VCU Friday night with a 2-1 win over the league's top team at The Diamond.
The Colonials received a tremendous pitching performance from junior Elliott Raimo and sophomore Trevor Kuncl, limiting the league's top offense to just one run.
Raimo started and lasted five innings, striking out eight while holding the Rams to a run on five hits. Kuncl picked up the baton in the sixth inning and pitched four spotless frames to earn his first win of the year. The sophomore struck out three and allowed just two hits.
GW found itself down 1-0 and without a hit entering the sixth inning, but tied the game thanks, in part, to its first hit. Junior Steve Barmakian extended the inning with a two-out single, setting the stage for a game-tying wild pitch.
The Colonials took the lead an inning later when first-year Cade Fergus reached on a two-out infield single that scored pinch runner Colin Brophy.
Kuncl worked around a leadoff double in the seventh and a single in the eighth before retiring the side in order in the ninth to close out the win.
GW will go for the series win on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. in the middle game of the set.
