Rubber match set for 1 p.m. on Sunday
RICHMOND, Va. -Â A night after a one-run win, GW baseball saw a one-run decision go the other way on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 in 10 innings against VCU at The Diamond.
The Rams pushed across the winning run in the last of the 10th on a single, sacrifice bunt and another single to even the series and force a rubber game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
GW jumped ahead in the top of the third inning, thanks in part to a pair of VCU errors. With runners at first and second, junior Steve Barmakian hit a comebacker to the mound that was thrown away, allowing first-year Logan Doran to score from second. Junior Nate Fassnacht followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
The Rams came right back to tie the game with two runs in the home half of the frame before GW moved back in front in the fifth when another error with Barmakian at the dish allowed Doran to score. VCU evened the game in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly, and the game remained deadlocked until the 10th.
First-year Rich Pfluger authored a quality start in a no-decision, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits in 6.2 innings, surpassing last week's outing for his longest of the season. The southpaw struck out three on the day and gave way to junior Keagan McGinnis, who struck out five in 2.1 scoreless frames of relief.
Doran and classmate Noah Levin provided two hits each to lead the Colonials' offense that notched seven singles on the afternoon.
