Rams come back from 5-0 deficit to top Colonials
RICHMOND, Va. -Â GW baseball built a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning of Sunday's rubber match with VCU, but saw the host Rams score eight straight runs over the next two innings to move ahead for good in a 9-7 win at The Diamond.
The Colonials started quick by scoring in their four at-bats to jump out to the five-run advantage. First-year Noah Levin started the parade with an RBI single in the first inning as part of a three-hit day.
Junior Steve Barmakian added a two-run single in the second and senior Dom D'Alessandro stretched the lead to four with a solo shot in the third inning. Junior Nate Fassnacht made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.Â
However, the Rams surged back with three runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to jump in front, 8-5.Â
The Colonials closed to within a run in the seventh on an RBI groundout from redshirt freshman Derek Ripp and an RBI single from first-year Anthony Frechette, but would get no closer.
VCU added an insurance tally in the bottom of the seventh to account for the final margin.
Levin led a quartet of Colonials with multi-hit days, including Ripp, sophomore Tyler Hix and first-year Cade Fergus who provided a pair of hits each.Â
GW hosts a pair of mid-week contests this week at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park, welcoming Penn on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. and Coppin State on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
