Colonials close April, open May with pair of mid-week bouts
WASHINGTON -Â Â GW baseball wraps up its home non-conference schedule with two mid-week matinees this week at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. The Colonials host Penn on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. and Coppin State on Wednesday at 3 p.m. with both games streamed live on ESPN+.
OVER THE WEEKEND:Â The Buff & Blue gave first-place VCU all they could handle over the weekend, but ultimately dropped two out of three to the Rams. The Colonials snagged a win in Friday's opener, 2-1, but fell in extra innings on Saturday and saw the hosts rally from an early deficit on Sunday to pull out the series victory.
First-year Noah Levin was a welcome addition back to the lineup, hitting .385 with a team-high five hits during the three-game set. Six of the seven Colonials hurlers that threw in the series allowed one earned run or fewer, headlined by sophomore Trevor Kuncl's 6.0 scoreless innings of relief in two appearances.
CONTINUING TO "RIPP":Â Redshirt freshman Derek Ripp extended his hitting streak to 13 games with knocks in all three games over the weekend, tying for the second longest streak on the team this year (Nate Fassnacht, 17). Primarily serving as the DH during the stretch, Ripp is hitting .420 (21-for-50) in his last 13 games with six doubles, seven runs scored and seven RBI. Ripp has increased his average 79 points to .308 since starting the streak with a three-double game at UMBC on April 9.
WELCOME BACK:Â Noah Levin missed nine games from April 9-21, but has returned with a vengeance in the last four games, collecting three multi-hit efforts as part of an 8-for-18 (.444) spurt with a double, four runs scored and three RBI. Levin has started 34 games for the Colonials and is the team's top freshman hitter (and fourth overall) with a .301 average.
ABOUT THE QUAKERS:Â Penn is 21-16 on the year following a series loss over the weekend against Cornell. The Quakers possess one of the best offenses in the nation, ranking second in the NCAA with a .335 team batting average and third overall in scoring at 9.0 runs per game. Seven of the eight regular staters for the Quakers are hitting at least .300 with Matt O'Neill leading the way at .410.
The two teams have not met since a four-game series in 2013 where Penn won three of the four matchups.Â
ABOUT THE EAGLES:Â Coppin State is coming off a sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore over the weekend to improve to 24-17 on the year. Another potent offense, the Eagles are 39th in the nation in batting average (.294) and 51st in runs per game (6.8). Both are top mark in the MEAC with Justin Banks ranking eighth overall in the nation with a .414 average.
GW bested Coppin, 7-1, on March 20 in Hanover, Md., and has never lost to its local rival, winning all 34 matchups in program history.
