Colonials aim to win second straight conference set
WASHINGTON - Winners of three straight and five of the last six, GW baseball heads to Amherst, Mass., this weekend to take on Massachusetts in a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. with games scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday and noon on Sunday. Friday's game will be streamed on ESPN+.
IN THE MID-WEEK: GW swiped a pair of victories this week, winning at UMBC, 11-6, on Tuesday and besting William & Mary, 8-4, on Wednesday. The Colonials hit .389 as a squad in the two games, racking up 28 hits, seven of which went for extra bases. Senior Dom D'Alessandro reached base in nine of 11 plate appearances, going 5-for-7 with four runs scored and four RBI.
PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER: Last week's series at George Mason was the first three-game set this year in which the Colonials have had their three weekend starters - junior Elliott Raimo, redshirt senior Brady Renner and senior Nate Woods - all start in the same series. All three have been working back from various ailments and have missed a combined nine starts through the first eight weekends of the season.
Last weekend, Woods returned with 3.0 scoreless frames and Raimo went at least 4.0 innings for the second straight start in GW's two wins. The Colonials are 9-6 in games started by the trio.
DYMANIC DUO: D'Alessandro and junior Nate Fassnacht have been the most productive pair of teammates in the nation this season, ranking fourth and fifth, respectively, in batting average. Normally hitting consecutively in the Colonials order, Fassnacht and D'Alessandro are both in the top-10 nationally in hits and among the top 35 in RBIs.
SUCCESS AWAY FROM HOME: GW won its first road series of the year last weekend at George Mason and improved to 5-4 away from Tucker Field at Barcroft Park with a win at UMBC Tuesday. The Buff & Blue have won five of six on the road since dropping three games at Tulane to start the season.

ABOUT THE MINUTEMEN: UMass is 8-16 on the campaign and 3-6 in conference play, but is coming off a series victory at home last weekend against preseason favorite Saint Louis. The Minutemen were previously swept at VCU and dropped two of three at Dayton. Collin Shapiro is the team's top hitter at .314 for a squad that hits .246 overall, 11th in the league. On the mound, UMass holds a 6.18 ERA, 10th in the league, paced by Sean Harney who possesses a 2.84 ERA in seven appearances.
SERIES HISTORY: UMass owns a slim 27-24 edge in the all-time series with the two sides last meeting in 2017, a series victory for the Minutemen. GW has not visited Amherst since 2012, with the last two road series altered by snow. In 2013, GW hosted the series and served as the visiting team while the two teams played in Northborough, Mass. in 2015.
