Colonials produced late to beat the Hawks
MERION STATION, Pa. - GW softball rallied back to beat Saint Joseph, 7-5, on Saturday afternoon and complete a doubleheader sweep to kick off its A-10 road slate.
Down a run entering the seventh, the Colonials scored three times thanks to three hits, a walk, a hit by pitch and two errors. Elena Shelepak knocked in the tying run with a grounder to third, and pinch runner Olivia Ortlieb raced home with the go-ahead run when the Hawks' third baseman threw wildly to first.
The Colonials produced some late-game magic to take the opener at SJU Softball Field, as well. They won 5-2, breaking open a tie game with three more seventh-inning runs. Jessica Linquist drove home the go-ahead run with an RBI single in that one.
Linquist went a combined 3-for-7 with two walks, two RBIs and two runs scored in the doubleheader to pace the Buff and Blue (25-10, 3-2 A-10) at the plate. The junior from New Jersey extended her program-record hitting streak to 22 games, and she's also recorded at least one RBI in seven straight games.
In the circle, Sierra Lange pitched 13 of 14 innings in the sweep. She picked up her 14th win of the season in the first game and her third save of the spring in the second.
GW 5, Saint Joseph's 2:Â With the score tied at two, the Colonials put up a three-spot in the top of the seventh to claim the opener.
GW made Saint Joseph's pay for a dropped line drive in right field to lead off the inning. After a hit batter and a sac bunt, Linquist lined a tie-breaking single back through the middle.
The Colonials added on with Jenna Cone driving in her 46th run of the season via a sac fly and Lange scoring Linquist with a two-out flare to right.
Lange then closed out the victory, working around a two-out walk to finish out the complete game.
To kick off the doubleheader, GW took the lead with a fast start in the top of the first. Linquist and Cone started the game with singles before Alessandra Ponce drove them in with a hit to center field for a 2-0 advantage.

Linquist and Cone stayed hot at the top of the order with two hits apiece, while Eslick also reached twice with a single and an HBP.
Lange allowed just three hits while striking out eight in the complete game. The sophomore hurler improved to 14-8 on the season by working around four walks and a hit by pitch to strand nine Hawks on the bases, including a pair in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth.

GW needed the late-game fireworks after Saint Joseph's surged ahead with a three-run fourth.
Trailing 5-4, the Colonials started the comeback with one out in the top of the seventh. Ponce was hit by a pitch, Priscilla Martinez walked and Morgan Kummer ripped her third single of the game to load the bases, setting the stage for the Buff and Blue to take the lead. Shelepak's grounder did the trick thanks to a pair of St. Joseph's errors on the play.
