Colonials set for three games vs. Hawks
The Colonials (23-10, 1-2 A-10) are set to face the Hawks (13-12, 3-0) in a Saturday doubleheader, starting at noon, at SJU Softball Field in Merion Station, Pa. They'll meet again Sunday to close the series with a noon first pitch.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW split a doubleheader vs. Morgan State on Wednesday, rolling past the Bears in the second game, 8-1.
Fittingly, Morgan Kummer led the offense in the victory over Morgan State, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. It was the first career three-hit game for the first-year from Wisconsin.
Kaitlin Buff picked up the win with two shutout innings of relief to improve to 4-2 on the season with Jayme Cone earning the first save of her career.
TERRIFIC AT THE TOP:Â Batting out of the leadoff spot, Jessica Linquist went 1-for-3 with a two-run double and an intentional walk in Wednesday's win over Morgan State, extending her hitting streak to a program-record 20 games.
Linquist is hitting .387 (24-for-62) with a team-high nine doubles, plus 16 RBIs and 22 runs scored, in that span, which began with the win over UNC Greensboro on March 3.Â
Thanks to an on-base percentage of .492 for the season, Linquist has reached base in 31 of 33 games overall, including 29 straight. She's chasing Jenna Cone's program record of 35 consecutive games reaching base, which was set last spring.
JENNA-RATING OFFENSE:Â Jenna Cone knocked in a pair of runs with a seventh-inning double in Wednesday's opener to push her season RBI total to 45, which ranks fourth nationally.
Cone has been on her own tear of late, hitting .462 (30-for-65) with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs over the past 20 games. She's also walked 11 times, good for a .538 on-base percentage.
For the season, Cone leads the A-10 in home runs (12), RBIs (45), total bases (89) and slugging percentage (.817).
In addition, Cone enters the weekend with 165 career RBIs, just five back of the program record held by Victoria Valos ('15).
ELITE COMPANY:Â GW totaled 23 hits in Wednesday's doubleheader to boost its team batting average to .361 for the season. The Colonials currently sit third nationally behind only Oklahoma (.368) and Florida State (.367).
The Colonials have racked up 334 hits through 33 games, collecting at least seven hits in all but one contest this season. They've reached double figures 19 times, highlighted by a trio of 14-hit efforts.
GW owns the top five individual batting averages in the conference with Sierra Lange (.439), Sidney Bloomfield (.416), Jenna Cone (.413), Linquist (.404) and Marta Fuentes (.393).
All five Colonials rank among the top 150 nationally in batting average.
SCOUTING SAINT JOSEPH'S:Â The Hawks started A-10 play last weekend, sweeping three games from Rhode Island. They were dominant in the series, outscoring the Rams, 27-2.
Ashley Ventura (8-8, 3.01 ERA) was named the A-10 Pitcher of the Week after picking up a pair of wins vs. Rhode Island. Sarah Ostaszewski is the top hitter for the Hawks with a .369 batting average and nine extra-base hits.
GW took two of three from Saint Joseph's on the Mount Vernon Campus last April with Lange earning both of the victories in the circle.
ON DECK:Â GW returns to the Vern next week with a non-conference doubleheader against Delaware State on Wednesday followed by a weekend series vs. Saint Louis.
