Sierra Lange and Jenna Cone homered in loss
MERION STATION, Pa. - Sierra Lange and Jenna Cone launched home runs Sunday afternoon, but George Washington softball dropped the series finale at Saint Joseph's, 7-4.
The Hawks used a five-run first inning to avoid being swept by the Colonials, who clinched a series victory by taking both ends of Saturday's doubleheader. The Buff and Blue wrapped the weekend at 25-11 overall and 3-3 in A-10 play on the season.
Lange hit a three-run home run to left center in the fifth inning to pull GW within 5-3. It was the sophomore's second long ball of the season and the eighth of her career. She also recorded her 10th double of the spring in the first inning.
Cone cleared the center field fence with a solo shot in the seventh. The junior slugger now has 13 homers and 47 RBIs this season, both A-10 highs. She finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, raising her batting average to .412.
In addition, Jessica Linquist singled in the third to extend her program-record hitting streak to 23 games.
It wasn't enough to catch Saint Joseph's, though. The first six Hawks reached base via four singles, a walk and a fielder's choice, powering the five-run opening inning.
Kaitlin Buff pitched well in relief for the Buff and Blue. After entering in the first, the junior from California pitched the rest of the game, allowing only a pair of unearned runs. She allowed just four hits in a season-long outing.
UP NEXT:Â GW is back on the Mount Vernon Campus with five home games next week. The Colonials start with a non-conference doubleheader against Delaware State on Wednesday before hosting Saint Louis for three A-10 games next weekend.
