Colonials picked up two more home wins Wednesday
The Colonials went extra innings to take the opener, winning it 6-5 on Jessica Linquist's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.
They beat the Hornets, 6-2, in the second game, boosted by the power hitting of Alessandra Ponce, who went 3-for-3 with a double and a two-run home run.
GW (27-11) took full advantage of windy conditions that made it difficult to track fly balls with 14 extra-base hits across the doubleheader.Â
Jenna Cone tied the program single-game record with a pair of triples in the opener and later added her A-10 leading 14th home run of the season.
Linquist also went deep and extended her program-record hitting streak to 25 games, while Hannah Eslick, Elena Shelepak and Sierra Lange all recorded multiple extra-base hits on the day, as well.
GW 6, Delaware State 5:Â After a fast start, the Colonials needed to come from behind late to take the opener.
GW jumped on top in the opening inning with the first four batters combining to hit for the cycle.Â
Linquist led off the bottom of first with a solo home run, her fifth of the season. Cone followed with a triple off the wall in right center before Lange brought her home with an RBI double down the right field line. Priscilla Martinez added an RBI single to make it 3-0.
The lead reached 4-0 an inning later on Cone's run-scoring triple before Delaware State hit back. The Hornets rallied to tie it with four unearned runs in the third and then took the lead with another run in the fifth.
GW recovered in time, though. Cone's solo shot tied it at five in the sixth, and after the teams traded zeros in the seventh, the Colonials won it in the eighth.
Shelepak led off the frame with a double. Riley Tejcek came in to run and moved up to third on a bunt by Olivia Ortlieb before heading home with the game-ending run on Linquist's opposite-field single.
Ten of GW's 13 hits in the victory went for extra bases. Cone, who had just one career triple entering the day, finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. The junior from California has now driven in 49 runs through 38 games.
At the top of the batting order, Linquist was on base in four of her five plate appearances, highlighted by the homer and the game-winning single.
Lange slugged a double and a triple and also picked up her 15th victory with three scoreless innings of relief. The sophomore from Texas allowed just a pair of hits and struck out two.
GW 6, Delaware State 2:Â The Colonials took care of business in the second game with a complete effort.
Megan Osterhaus, Faith Weber and Kaitlin Buff combined to hold Delaware State to two runs on four hits, while Ponce sparked the offense from the middle of the order.
After the Hornets scored an unearned run in the first, GW went in front for good in the second. Ponce doubled to lead off the frame and scored on Shelepak's flare that turned into an RBI triple. Eslick later made it 2-1 with a sac fly.
The Buff and Blue added on with a two-out rally in the third. Martinez extended the inning with an RBI single before Ponce followed with her two-run shot to extend the lead to 5-1. It was her fifth long ball and 15th extra-base hit of the season.
Martinez had a pair of hits in the victory, including a fifth-inning double that led to GW's final run. The junior from California scored twice and also knocked in a run.
Osterhaus, Weber and Buff handled the rest. Osterhaus made her third start of the season and allowed just one unearned run in three innings of work. Weber went the next three to earn her fourth win of the season before Buff closed it out by shutting out the Hornets in the seventh.
UP NEXT: GW stays at home this weekend to host Saint Louis for an A-10 series. The Colonials and Billikens are set to play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon before closing the set Sunday with another noon first pitch.
