Colonials close non-conference slate vs. Hornets
LAST TIME OUT:Â GWÂ (25-11) picked up a series win at Saint Joseph's last weekend, taking two out of three against the Hawks to even its Atlantic 10 record at 3-3.
The Colonials swept a doubleheader Saturday on the strength of some late-game magic. They scored three in the seventh in the opener for a 5-2 win before scoring three more in the final inning in the second game to erase a one-run deficit and claim a 7-5 victory.
Jessica Linquist had hits in all three contests, extending her program-record hitting streak to 23 games. Sierra Lange had a team-high five hits, with three of them for extra bases, on the weekend, highlighted by a three-run home run in Sunday's finale.
Lange also starred in the circle, tossing 13 of 14 innings in Saturday's sweep. The sophomore hurler earned a win and a save on the day and tallied 12 strikeouts to push her A-10 leading total to 131 for the season.
HITTING ON ALL CYLINDERS:Â Batting out of the No. 3 spot in the order, Lange has piled up 55 hits through 36 games.Â
The Texas native enters the week ranked second in the country in total hits, just one behind Katie Yun of Ohio. Her .437 batting average ranks first in the A-10 and 29th nationally.
Lange needs just 10 more hits to equal the program's single-season record, which is shared by GW Athletics Hall of Famer Elana Meyers Taylor ('06) and Marta Fuentes ('18). Meyers Taylor also holds the single-season batting average mark at .414.
RECORD WATCH:Â After becoming the program's all-time home run leader earlier this season, Jenna Cone is poised to take over the top spot for RBIs, as well. The junior from California has driven in 47 runs this season to rank tied for fourth nationally, and she currently sits second on the program's RBI list with 167, three back of Victoria Valos ('15).
Cone also sits second behind Valos with 77 extra-base hits and 332 total bases. She's third all-time in runs scored (117), as well.
HAIL TO THE BUFF:Â Kaitlin Buff pitched nine innings over three relief appearances last week without allowing an earned run.
Buff claimed a win Wednesday with two scoreless innings of work as GW beat Morgan State, 8-1. The junior from California tossed an inning of scoreless relief Saturday at Saint Joseph's and earned another victory when the Colonials rallied with three runs in the seventh for a 7-5 triumph. She logged a season-high six innings in Sunday's finale vs. the Hawks, allowing just a pair of unearned runs.
SCOUTING DELAWARE STATE:Â The Hornets (6-18) dropped two of three last weekend to Howard in MEAC action.
Delaware State's top hitter Jasmine Melgoza has 10 multi-hit efforts in 24 games, while Briana Baker (3-10, 7.24 ERA) leads the Hornets in the circle.
GW is unbeaten all-time at 5-0 vs. Delaware State.
ON DECK:Â GW is back at the Vern this weekend to host Saint Louis in A-10 play. The series kicks off with a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon before finishing Sunday with another noon first pitch.
